Description

Apparently I'm the only person who did not get this book as a kid, but thanks to ThisNext, my daughter enjoys hearing these poems read to her. I try to stick to just one a night so we can make it last.

Description

Even after reading this book I don't know how many times, my daughter still loves it. I, on the other hand, have been known to skip large chunks of the repetitive text on occasion. The good news is that she does understand the value of trying things she thinks she might not like. Did this book help? Perhaps.

Good Night Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann

4 people recommended this item

Description

I don't think any of us have ever tired of reading this book. There's very little in the way of words to read, but every page has a lot going on (except for the totally black page which is fun in its own right).

The more you study the pictures the more hidden stories you see in this book. For example, look for the unspoken mouse/banana thread, the balloon thread, or have your child find the moon in each picture.

I didn't have TV to watch Sesame Street as a kid, but I do remember this book and it has survived the times. Put all your acting ability into the reading and your kids will treasure it as I did.

The City of Ember, by Jeanne Duprau

First to recommend

Description

This is a fantastic new kids science fiction book (perhaps late elementary or kids reading at that age). Though I didn't get the thrill of reading it as a kid, I enjoyed it nonetheless as an adult.

I caught my son pretending to be sleeping last night while it was obvious he had been staying up late reading this book. Makes me proud...

Jeanne Duprau has already written a sequel (The People of Sparks) and a prequel (The Prophet of Yonwood) is coming out in May.

Update: My son enjoyed the sequel as much as the original, and said if he had to pick, then the third one would be his favorite.

Highlights Magazine for Children

First to recommend

2 people recommended this item

Description

Kids love getting mail and a subscription to Highlights becomes something they look forward to each month.

I remember enjoying the Higlights magazines when I was young, my son had fun with them for a while, and my daughter is approaching that Highlights age. She already loves the hidden pictures puzzles which seem to be everybody's favorite.

Goodnight Moon

Description

Some kids need to hear the words "good night" many times to help settle them down. This classic book delivers, especially when read slowly and combined with occasional fake yawns.
