Outlander: Diana Gabaldon: Books

Description

To quote the friend who lent me this book: "Give it 75 pages or so..." And I would completely agree. The story starts off slow and you really start to wonder where it could possibly go and why in heaven you would continue to read for 600 pages. Seriously, who can't tell a story in less than 600 pages?

But then it turns and all of a sudden you're completely entranced. I don't remember when it happened but ther have been plenty late nights for me where I just want to keep going and not go to sleep. The olde Scottish dialogue is a bit tricky to follow at first but I put the book down feeling like I'm thinking in a brogue in my head. It's a must read and I can't wait to explore more of Gabaldon's books.

Lauren Willig - Books

First to recommend

Description

Lauren Willig's series of "flower spies" books, based off of the original Scarlet Pimpernel are all fun to read. I have no idea if any of it is factual, though based on the pseudo-narrator's position as a history phd student, I would assume there's some historical truth. Regardless, the characters are fun and the stories contain equal parts mystery, romance, friendship and adventure. Definitely start at the beginning though and stay in order of publication so you don't get lost!

Love in the Time of Cholera: Gabriel Garcia Marquez: Books

Description

A lot of people hate this book and everything he's written, but I absolutely adore it. It's quite possible it took 3 months to get through but it's a beautiful timeless love story if you can wade through all the text. Highly recommend it, especially if you're looking to feel more intellectual ;-)

Philippa Gregory books

First to recommend

Description

I have read almost all of Philippa Gregory's historical fiction novels and have 110% loved every single one of them. I wish I had thought to read them in chronological order to save myself a bit of confusion over the timing and intricacies of Tudor England but I have now developed a slight obsession with the era and will read just about anything this woman writes. In case you'd like to read them in order (I think):
The Constant Princess
The Other Boleyn Girl
The Boleyn Inheritance
The Queen's Fool
The Virgin's Lover

The Blessing Stone: Barbara Wood: Books

First to recommend

Description

Bought this book by chance the day after my wedding before leaving for our honeymoon, largely because my maiden name is Stone and the title caught my eye as I was starting to grieve my previous name :-).

It turned out to be a wonderful random pick- could be considered hokey that all the stories weave together but I find it a beautiful notion, that there are things connecting every one of us to the past through the ages. I was thoroughly entertained and especially intrigued by the cavemen!

The Red Tent: A Novel: Anita Diamant

2 people recommended this item

Description

I love the lyrical writing and the way that Anita Diamant is able to bring Biblical times to life. It's a story that we're never told but should be known by women every where. We have no way of knowing if it's true or even close to true but I personally believe in every word. This is a book I treasure and read over and over.

Books: The Time Traveler's Wife, by Audrey Niffenegger, Paperback, Reprint

8 people recommended this item

Description

This is the most wonderful love story. It took a little while to understand what was happening, but once I got into it, I was completely engrossed with the story. I genuinely did not want the book to end, ever. The characters are beautiful and the writing makes you feel as though you are part of the story- I honestly could not stop reading and was sad when I finished. Note- this is a tear jerker so be sure to have the tissues handy!
