Dirty by Sonic Youth
First to recommend
2 people recommended this item
Description
I think "Dirty" was the first Sonic Youth album I ever bought (although for a long time I listened to it on a cassette taped dubbed from my best friend, and for some reason the sound only worked on the left speaker). I was 14 and just starting to get into music that wasn't played on top 40 stations, and "Dirty" made me feel like I might be cool. The record still sounds really new and exciting to me, almost a decade and a half later.

Description
No matter how many fancy lipsticks and glosses I acquire, I will always maintain my love for Bonne Bell Lip Smackers (especially the watermelon and cotton candy flavors).

Heavy Rotation Kitten Rad t-shirt

Description
I spotted Heavy Rotation's Kitten Rad tshirt today while browsing at Zanzabelle in Silver Lake (one of the few shops I can think of that sells t-shirts AND gelato). It's the perfect cotton and I'm probably going to be dreaming of the shirt nonstop till I finally cave in and go back to buy one.

Description
I miss Temple of the Dog. I miss grunge in general. I used to practically fall over every time the video for "Hunger Strike" came on, I was so crazy for the Chris Cornell/Eddie Vedder juxtaposition. (via joe)

Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre -The Complete Collection Gift Set

Description
This is another love that goes back to long before my teen years...but I'm sure I came back to it during a very Courtney Love-informed resurgence in fairy tale obsession at some point in my adolescence. All the 26 episodes of Faerie Tale Theatre (originally on Showtime in the early 80s) are so classic and so beautifully shot, with such genius casting: Jeff Goldblum as The Big Bad Wolf in "Three Little Pigs," Mick Jagger in "The Nightingale," Paul Reubens as Pinocchio, Susan Sarandon in "Beauty & The Beast," and so on and on and on...It's a treasure that I would love to see unearthed for kids right now. Pure magic.

Joe Versus the Volcano (1990)

I'm sure many people would argue this is not a classic. But it is! It is! Some of Meg Ryan's best work, and the story is a wonderful parable. (via esh)

Dangerous Angels: The Weetzie Bat Books by Francesca Lia Block

Description
Francesca Lia Block probably has a lot to do with why I moved to Los Angeles in 2003 after spending all of my first 25 years in the Northeast. She romanticizes the city in such a powerful-yet-subtle manner that, if you really absorb it, continues to color the whole L.A. landscape in a really exciting and beautiful way. I always go back to the Dangerous Angels series when I need an enduring pick-me-up and a little break from the sometimes-not-so-lovely realities of living in Shangri-La/Hell-A.

Okay, so this is more like age 5 rather than 15, but my love for Shel Silverstein has never faded over the years. I was so excited to give this book to my niece last Christmas, and I can't wait to share it with other future Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout fans over the years...

My So-Called Life (DVD)

Description
It's such a cliche coming from someone who went through high school in the early 90s, but "My So-Called Life" is probably my favorite TV show of all-time. ("Freaks and Geeks" is maybe a little bit better, but I didn't discover that till I was well into my 20s.) I miss Angela. When I see Claire Danes now in movies like "Shopgirl," some tiny part of my heart dies just a little bit.

Powell's Books - Girl by Blake Nelson

Description
I read this when I was seventeen, then reread it at least five times since then. It still blows my mind how Blake Nelson so perfectly writes in the voice of a suburban teenage girl. Probably my favorite coming-of-age book ever.
