Sew Easy Machine
First to recommend
Description
When I was a kid my dad showed me how to use the Sew Easy and my grandmother taught me to sew by hand. Though the crafty patterns that were included with Sew Easy were seductive, I preferred making my own free form, hand stitched blobs from leftover pajama flannel.

Spool Knit Jewelry
First to recommend
Description
I was pretty obsessed with making spool knit bracelets as a kid. In the 70s all I had was the spool, 1 plastic crochet hook and a crummy instruction page which proves just how easy it is to do. In this century you can buy your spool and hook packaged with a fancy shmancy spiral bound how to book. Now that's progress. (via Amazon)

Solid Brass Paper Fasteners

Description
They're not just for book reports! Way better than boring old staples, paper fasteners keep paper together AND able to rotate so you can make your own paper wheel creations. (via Amazon)

My Tissue Art Book
First to recommend
Description
Any craft involving Elmers glue is kiddie crack. And this was all about the glue. Sometimes I got to use real colored tissue paper, but when there was none available it was pink and white Kleenex time. Tissues and glue makes me think of snot, which is of course is the ultimate kiddle crack (and lunch time snack). (via Amazon)

Burpee : The Complete Vegetable & Herb Gardener
First to recommend
Description
When I was really young my dad was into gardening so there was always a Burpee catalog lying around the house. I liked to cut out the photos of the flowers and vegetables and arrange them on the shag carpet to create an indoor paper garden. Also works with Better Homes and Gardens magazine. Throw in some National Geographic photos for an exotic look. (via Amazon)

Bonsai Boy's Tropical/Subtropical Mix Bonsai Soil
First to recommend
Description
Dirt. Just add water and you've got one of the most engaging kiddie substances of all time - mud. Can you remember how good it felt to be coated in mud? I made mud pies and gave them to everyone including my next door neighbor, old uncle Harry. He was kind enough to take them inside his house and pretend to eat them. What a nice man. I recommended this brand because it reflects my more adult, refined interest in dirt - for bonsai trees. (via Amazon)

Two Potato Clock
First to recommend
Description
I was never really impressed with this concept as a kid, though looking back it's a pretty cool use for a potato. I have these memories of suspending half a potato with toothpicks over a water filled paper cup. That was boring. Then there's potato stamps - cut potato in half, carve a design into flat part, dip in paint and stamp away. That's ok. But the most fun kiddie use of a potato has to be a potato gun. (via Amazon)

Description
Baking soda safely cleans just about anything and works mysteriously as a fabric softener and baking ingredient. But who can forget the most dynamic use of baking soda - to make volcanoes! Before there was Mentos and Coke, there was baking soda and vinegar. At least 1 kid in the class always tried to get into the science fair with the ole volcano trick - hooray! (via Amazon)
