The Harry Smith Project: The Anthology Of American Folk Music Revisited (2 CD/2 DVD BOX SET)
First to recommend
Description
So many artists were influenced by the original Harry Smith Anthology of American Folk music. Countless artists mined the back catalogue of traditional music. Now, today's artists pay homage to the seminal work. With artists such as Elvis Costello, Beth Orton, WIlco, Nick Cave, Lou Reed and Van Dyke Parks weighing in.

Description
The best album devoted to Anne Frank ever! Seriously though, there are few albums that can match up to unreserved awesomeness that is In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. "King of Carrot Flowers pt 1" is probably my favorite messed-up love songs of all time.

The White Stripes - De Stijl

Description
This is my all-time favorite White Stripes album. A lot of the songs are shorter, and some veer towards the pop side of things. It's much more Hotel Yorba than Dead Leaves on the Dirty Ground. When things were pretty and songs were stripped down.

Nebraska: Bruce Springsteen

Description
Haunting, sparse, raw and lofi. A very dark album, without the catchy hooks you associate with Springsteen's major body of work. But this is the album I love.

Pop: U2

Description
I am a huge U2 fan. They were the first band that sucked me into music geekdom. Now, a lot of people don't like this particular album, but personally, I think it's great. The thing I love most about U2's catalogue is that there's something for absolutely every mood you could be in. This is the slightly dark, electropop album. Sometimes you need that. "If You Wear That Velvet Dress" is a gorgeous song, "Staring at the Sun" and "Please" are terrific singles and "If God Will Send His Angles" is beautiful. Yes, it has dancy moments, like "Discotheque", "Mofo", "Last Night on Earth", and "Gone", but it's so much more than that.

Rattle and Hum by U2

Description
Not just your average soundtrack to a concert documentary. Contains songs only found on this album, like "Angel of Harlem", "When Love Comes to Town" and "All I Want Is You". The live version of "Silver and Gold" is one of my all-time favorite songs. While the movie might not be a must-own, the album certainly is.

Live at the Roxy: Social Distortion

Description
It's pretty rare for me to replace the album cut of a song with a live one on my playlists, but the live version of "Mommy's Little Monster" is definitely the best version of this song committed to tape, in my opinion. This album is full of great live gems, and a terrific album to get you going. Amazing energy and a lot of fun.

August and Everything After: Counting Crows

Description
Say what you will about them now, but the Counting Crows first record was really good. Produced by T Bone Burnett, this was a great debut album. Everyone knows "Mr. Jones & Me", but almost every song on the album is solid.

The Libertines - The Libertines

Description
The prototypical british indie rock band. Great hooky songs and witty, sometimes scathing lyrics. The reason why anyone cares about Pete Doherty, he used to make really great music. This proves it.

Mermaid Avenue: Billy Bragg & Wilco

Description
So British singer/songwriter Billy Brag, and amazing alt.country band Wilco team up to dig through Woody Guthrie's unreleased records. The result... magic. It's a folk dream, with modern arrangements. Natalie Merchant guests on a song or two as well. Great Sunday morning record.
