Essential Ted Leo & The Pharmacists
First to recommend
Description
Great sampler of Ted Leo & the Pharmacists songs. All the up-beat pop you need to have a great spring drive with the top down. The songs come from a variety of albums, spanning their career. There's even a great cover of a Stiff Little Fingers song in there. Terrific intro to a great band.

Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man Soundtrack
First to recommend
Description
A star-studded tribute concert to one of the world's must under-appreciated singer-songwriters. Not every song from the movie makes into onto this collection, but with songs done by Rufus and Martha Wainwright (joined by their mother and aunt, Kate & Anna McGarrigle), Nick Cave, Beth Orton, U2, Jarvis Cocker and others, it's a terrific album filled with jems.

Superstar Car Wash: Goo Goo Dolls
First to recommend
Description
Most people know the Goo Goo Dolls for the ballads, popular on "adult alternative" stations. And while that may or may not be your cup of tea, most people don't realize that they started off wanting to be just like the Replacements. Some of their really early stuff is pretty raw, but right about the early 90s they hit a sweet spot between that and the commercial singles they became known for. This album captures some really great kinda indie songs. Open to close, this is a strong garage-rock album. Worth checking out regardless of how you feel about their more recent ventures.

The Lord of the Rings: Motion Picture Trilogy Soundtrack (3CD & 18 Trading Cards)

Description
You know you've seen a film too many times when you can tell what scene it is just from listening to the soundtrack. Yes, I am that LOTR geek. But it's also great background music. Many a paper in college was written to this soundtrack let me tell you.

Achtung Baby

Description
My personal favorite U2 album, and seminal as far as production goes. Eno and Lanois helped U2 take the wall of sound to a whole new level. Some overlooked favorites include "Ultraviolet (Light My Way)" and "Acrobat".

13 Songs: Fugazi
First to recommend
Description
Punk is not dead. Fugazi still carries the torch of great, aggressive punk rock. A bit more than just three chords and some attitude, they take punk and made it grow up a little and learn to play their instruments. Love the bass lines, and the whole thing just rocks. Good album for getting your energy up.

Gin Blossoms - New Miserable Experience

Description
A classic 90s album. This is so nostalgic for me. Great jangly pop songs with a bit of an edge. Yes, overall it's a melancholy album, but sometimes you need and album that understands heartache but isn't maudlin.

Automatic for the People by R.E.M.

Description
For a long time I really loathed the mere mention of R.E.M. Then I realized when this album came out in '92 I was 14 and too young to appreciate it. As I got older, the R.E.M. that was blaring in my ears were songs like Losing My Religion (which I still don't like). Now that I'm older I can revisit this album and truly appreciate it for songs like:
Sweetness Follows
Star Me Kitten
Try Not to Breathe
I do like Everybody Hurts but unfortunately its beaten over our heads, ears, and eyes. Thank MTV.
Great album all around. (via Amazon)

American Idiot: Green Day

Description
Green Day grows up. Great album with hooky, catchy songs filled with smart lyrics. Definitely in the rock-opera vein, with some songs clocking in at over 9mn, but none of them ever feel bloated. Energetic and edgy rock'n'roll.

Gimme Fiction: Spoon

Description
From the first few seconds of "The Beast and Dragon Adored", with all the strange, sort of ambient noise rolling around behind the bass line until the song kicks in, you know you're in for something different. Somehow Spoon always seems to make the catchiest non-commercial pop music. It's pretty and catchy without being overly hooky and driven. They use sparse arrangements and great vocal melodies to carry along these gems.
