iTunes Store: The Verve - Urban Hymns

2 people recommended this item

Description

This was the album that broke the Verve, both in terms of popularity and it marked the beginning of the end for a great group. "Bittersweet Symphony" was the inescapable big hit, but the whole album is great. Richard Ashcroft is probably at his best ever, and there's musicianship to match. A great, classic album.

Who's Next: The Who

Description

*The* classic british rock album. The big hits are all here, "Baba O'Riley" (better known as that "Teenage Wasteland" song), "Behind Blue Eyes", and "Won't Get Fooled Again", but every song on the album is great rock and roll. "Going Mobile" predicts cell phones and the internet in a way that would be unimaginable to most people in the 70s. "Bargain" is also a great, with aggressive guitars and a kicking rhythm backbone. How can you not love Keith Moon's drumming? This is when the Who were at their creative peak, creating timeless rock classics.

Quadrophenia: The Who

Description

My personal favorite of the rock-operas. It swings from agressive guitars in songs like "The Real Me" and "The Punk and the Godfather" to calm beauty in "Love, Reign O'er Me" and "I'm One" through catchy, crazy, driven songs like "5:15", full of pulsing bass lines and R&B rhythms. Half of these songs are all-time favorite Who songs for me. Definitely a desert island disc.

Tommy: The Who

Description

The original rock opera. This album showcases Pete Townshend's ability as not only an amazing songwriter, but a conceptual visionary. It is worth noting that there are some dark themes running through the music and that some people find it disturbing. Personally, I don't think it's their best album ever, but it's very strong with some great songs and it still stands the test of time well. "Amazing Journey", "Sparks" "See Me, Feel Me/Listening to You", and, of course, "Pinball Wizard" are standout tracks.

Live at Leeds: The Who

Description

One of the greatest live recordings of all time. It captures the Who at their peak, with guitars a-blazing and full of aggression and energy. This was when they were known for their ear-splitting concerts and wrecking guitars. It's worth getting the deluxe edition, which provides an almost complete performance of Tommy on the second disc.

Screamadelica: Primal Scream

Description

Euphoric album from some of Glasgow's finest. It's a damn good thing Bobbie Gillespie left the Jesus and Mary Chain, because otherwise we'd never have these popy, psychedelic, dancy gems. I've never been an Acid House fan, and although they draw on some of the same themes, I find this album to be much more accessible.

Social Distortion: Social Distortion

Description

The third album from OC punk pioneers sees them cranking out more good Clash via Johnny Cash tunes. And speaking of Cash, there's a cover of "Ring of Fire" on here. Personal favorites "Sick Boy", "Story of My Life" (yes, that would be one of my ringtones), and "Ball & Chain". Tons of raw energy here. I always find Social D to be good when I need to get pumped up.

Sex, Love and Rock 'n' Roll: Social Distortion

First to recommend

Description

The latest offering from Social D sees them putting out more of the crankin' country punk that we love them for. Possibly a touch closer to straight rock'n'roll than previous efforts, they've lost none of their energy with age though. Very solid offering with plenty of catchy songs. Good album for driving around with the top down on a summer day.

And Out Come the Wolves: Rancid

Description

I remember the first time I heard "Timebomb" and "Ruby Soho". I was starting high school and didn't know they made music like this. It was a revelation. It was catchy and raw, full of angry energy and aggressive guitars. This album introduced me to the wonderful world of punk and it still holds up really well over 10 years later. One of the few records I have held onto from those days.

Mommy's Little Monster: Social Distortion

First to recommend

Description

Debut album from Social D, this is a kicking punk album with attitude to spare. Tons of aggressive guitars, with lots of energy and swagger. Key tracks: "The Creeps" and "Mommy's Little Monster" (although for my money, the version off of Live at the Roxy manages to pack in even more energy and bravado)
