Christietown: A Novel About Vintage Clothing, Romance, Mystery, and Agatha Christie

First to recommend

Description

This book is interestingly written as it switches between modern day West Hollywood and 1920's suburban England (the time of Agatha Christie).

It's perfect for me because I can relate to both places since I grew up in England and now live in LA.

If you like mystery novels or have a passion for vintage clothing then you should read this. A weird combo I know, but it works!

Description

Everybody with any interest in human relationships should read some Jeanette Winterson - she totally deconstructs sexuality and really makes you think about the assumptions we make about both our own relationships and those of other people.

Description

This is an intelligent and witty look at life in Hollywood set in 2003, cleverly juxtaposed with the beginning of the war in Iraq. It's a really good read.

Kabul Beauty School: An American Woman Goes Behind the Veil: Deborah Rodriguez

First to recommend

Description

This book is so fascinating, they're making it into a movie which I think will be awesome. It's about a irrepressible, loud mouthed hairdresser from the midwest who goes to Afghanistan and sets up a beauty school for Afghan women who are only just coming to terms with their "liberation" from the ultra repressive Taliban regime.

It's funny, inspiring and heartbreaking at the same time. READ IT!
