My Rubik's Obsession - a list by Jessyca
Options for This Page
About this list:
I have an obsession. It's not a textbook obsession because it comes and goes, but I am drawn to the Rubik's Cube in a way that defies explanation. Not just the cube though, all forms. Pyramids, 3x3, 4x4, 5x5, and the one that taunts me... 6x6. Toy stores everywhere taunt me, the Internet begs me, and my silly little collection grows. Truth be told it's a great thing to do while sitting on the couch when my husband is watching all those baseball games :)
Qualifications:
I'm a geeky girl who just can't put the dang thing down...

Rubik Cube

Description
The classic puzzle which separates the puzzle-loving wheat from the chaff. A badge of geekery meant to symbolize your analytical reasoning skills, your spatial reasoning skills, and therefore, of course, the likelihood you'll succeed out in the real world. Or at least in a roomful of other geeks who haven't managed to solve the damn thing yet.

Rubik's Revenge Cube 4 X 4
First to recommend
Description
So, a simple 3x3 Rubik's Cube is SOooo 1980-something. The stealthy geeks in the 90s just couldn't stop with a 3x3. After all, if you can solve a puzzle in less than a minute you're not really getting a mental workout anymore. The 4x4 is the essential step up when you're looking to bring your workout to the next level. A tad bit of additional dexterity is required. And a LOT more time on your hands.

Rubik's Professor Cube 5x5

Description
This is where the obsession gets a smidge out of hand. Really. I have nightmares about this one. I fear my hands are too small and not nimble enough to tackle the Professor. (Seriously, who names these things?!) At any rate, it calls my name in a soft sultry whisper, like a mermaid... a really geeky mermaid. One day I will purchase this. And many years later I'll hurl it out the window in a stream of obscenities that cause people's ears to bleed.

Rubiks Key Ring - A Rubiks Cube Keychain
First to recommend
Description
When you REALLY just can't put it down and walk away, the keychain version of the Rubik's Cube can keep your buzz going. Only problem is, it's more of a showpiece than a practice aid. Mine crumbled in my hands after what I can only assume is normal usage (normal for who?!). Still, it's diminutive size adds to it's lovability.

The Simple Solution to Rubik's Cube: James G. Nourse: Books
First to recommend
Description
Inevitably I will want to take my game to the next level. And when I do I'll purchase this book. Especially once I get my hands on that 4x4 and that (shudder) 5x5. And NO, it's NOT cheating. If you pick up the book and learn how to solve the puzzle, you still know how to solve the puzzle...

Rubik's Pyramid

Description
These puppies are hard to come by! I've been looking all over the web for anyone who sells the real deal new, but I can only find imitation Rubik's Pyramids for sale new... so for this gem, you MUST go to eBay. If you think the cube is too hard but you want to get started somewhere, I HIGHLY recommend the pyramid. It's actually quite easy to solve and solve quickly... a fantastic confidence builder. Being the OBSESSED one that I am, you must by an original on eBay. If not, you're just imitation like the Pyramid.

Rubik’s Cube Barrel/Octagonal Puzzle

Description
I bought one of these on eBay a few years ago. It's SO pretty and seems like it ought to solve just like the 3x3... after all, it IS a 3x3 with the corners cut off... right? WRONG! When you're looking for a break from the structure of the cube, this one's quite a trip. It makes some funky (and infuriating) shapes! Good luck!

Square 1 - Rubik's Cube (sorta)

Description
I just wrote a long witty recommendation for this cube... and I accidentally hit the wrong button and it disappeared into the ether. Short version: Beautiful shapes and possibilities, maddening to solve. Geeks around the world have solved and shared their solutions for the Square 1 so you needn't leave it in a drawer like I do. I solved it once and I'm afraid to pick it back up again.
