From the Corner of His Eye

Description
From the Corner of His Eye is the first novel that I read by Dean Koontz who has since become my absolute favorite author. The characters in this story are amazing which includes protagonists Barty and Angel, two gifted young children born world's apart but were both born into tragedy, and Junior Cain, the antagonist, a violent criminal with evil intentions. I love the way that he integrates fiction, physics, science fiction, and horror into his stories and still finds a way to make us love and loathe the characters.

Odd Thomas

Description
Odd Thomas is the first book in a series that follows Odd Thomas. He's one of the most eccentric characters in any novel and he has a very special gift--he can see and talk to the dead. Consequently, he uses his gift to help lost souls find peace and justice so they can crossover and he often enjoys the company of ghost Elvis who refuses to leave. Every gift has it's price as the tagline says when Odd battles the forces of evil to save hundreds of lives. Odd Thomas is compelling and you will get hooked from the first page. I love that it never looses its pace or wit throughout. A great thriller that you will love.

Fear Nothing

Description
I really enjoyed Fear Nothing. It's a great story that follows Christopher Snow, a young man who is cursed to spend forever in darkness because the slightest sliver of sun rays or fluorescent light could be deadly thanks to a rare skin disease. Still, he does not let this stop him from living as normal a life as possible. After dark, he takes to the streets with his girlfriend Sasha, his dog, and other friends. Unfortunately, he discovers that when the sun goes down, his peaceful town becomes a cesspool for crime. With crooked cops running the place, he and his crew take it upon themselves to make their home safe again.

One Door Away from Heaven

Description
I'm actually in the process of reading this one now and its a really great book. It starts off strong from the first page introducing characters and conflicts that you definitely want to get to know more about. The main protagonist in this novel is Mickey, a twenty something young woman who lives with her aunt in a trailer home and is confused about life and where she wants to go. She actually doesn't take anything seriously until she meets her neighbor, a young girl with disability and a strange, dangerous family. After her neighbor disappears, Mickey fears for the young girl and sets out on a quest to find them to save the girl and consequently, saving herself.

The Coldest Winter Ever

Description
I usually never read these type of books but I just happened to pick this one up and I was very fascinated by the main character, Winter, and the struggles that she goes through as a young black teenager raised in questionable environment. Winter was born the daughter of a drug lord, so she was a fan of the ghetto lifestyle but never actually had to experience the hardships because her father made a lot of money and was able to buy them nice homes, cars, clothing, and jewelry. His luck ran out though and he was arrested and sentenced to a long prison term. Winter's mother was no help to the family because she became a victim of the substance that had kept them well-off for so long, leaving her children to fend for themselves. Winter's lavish lifestyle became her downfall as she did whatever she had to do to keep herself living in the lap of luxury. I think this is a great commentary on the power of consumerism and what things can make us do to ourselves and the people we love.

Just Say No!

Description
Just Say No! is one of my favorite novels. It follows a young man from North Carolina with a gifted voice as he struggles with the power and money he gains from a sudden rise to fame. I found myself laughing out loud at some of John and his best friend Darin's antics, but also there's a very dramatic element that will having you gasping in shock and eventually in tears. Omar Tyree did a great job with getting into the characters and making them real.

The Color Purple

Description
The Color Purple is one of most powerful books that you will read. There is also a film based on the novel which is equally as powerful, but the novel offers a little more detail and graphics than a movie made at that time could show.
Those not familiar with The Color Purple, it follows a young Black woman named Cecile who was forced into an abusive marriage at age 14 and separated from her family. For a long time, she served as more of a slave than a wife to her husband, even being forced to call him Mister. An encounter and bond with her husband's mistress though helps give Cecile the courage and strength she needs to stand up and fight back. Cecile works to become a poster child for power, freedom, and overcoming male domination and abuse.

The Great Gatsby

Description
Usually, I moan in disgust when I think about the classics I was forced to read in high school but The Great Gatsby actually turned out to be one of my favorite novels of all time. F. Scott Fitzgerald created a wonderful recreation of the 1920's and every emotion I felt for and toward the characters and events were genuine because I get so sucked in to their world.
