Description
For those of us too young to remember the young Mick Jagger; those who still cannot believe the Beatles broke up; and those who simply enjoy a splendid photograph, "The British Are Coming" exhibit at Manhattan's "Not Fade Away Gallery" will delight, intrigue and inspire. Not the least of which because admission is free. (via Rolling Stone)

Coco avant Chanel: with Audrey Tatou - screenplay by Anne Fontaine, Camille Fontaine and Christopher Hampton
First to recommend
Description
For much of her adult life, Coco Chanel carefully guarded the truth about her humble beginnings in the care of the nuns of the Aubazine convent in France. But, in my mind at least, she is all the more fascinating and triumphant for having literally sewn the seeds of her own later success. And I cannot wait to meet this young Coco, as played by the new face of Chanel No. 5: Audrey Tatou. (via Vogue)

Amazon: The Survivors Club: The Secrets and Science that Could Save Your Life by Ben Sherwood
First to recommend
Description
This book is not for the faint of heart . . . but, then, neither is life. With such unlikely chapter headings as "How to Eat an Elephant," the premise may seem far-fetched, exotic and, well, unappetizing. But is a fascinating argument for the power of optimism, faith, and a plucky attitude to see you through the unthinkable. And, perhaps, daring to think about "what if" is, in and of itself, the primary and crucial step in surviving and thriving.

Barnes and Noble: Patriotic Grace by Peggy Noonan
First to recommend
Description
This triumphant book picks up where Obama left off after proclaiming ". . . there is not a liberal America and a conservative America; there is the United States of America. There is not a black America and white American and Latino America and Asian America; there's the United States of America . . . We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the Stars and Stripes, all of us defending the United States of America." Through her book, filled with references to the Baby Boomers and the Greatest Generation, Noonan calls us to rise to our becomes the own best version of our own generation. Now. Today. As Americans all.

Barnes and Noble: Casey Back at Bat by Dan Gutman
First to recommend
Description
Anyone who has ever listened to the original poem "Casey at the Bat" (written by Ernest Lawrence Thayer, circa 1888) will appreciate the never-say-die attitude of this sequel by Dan Gutman. And it might provide a much-needed dose of confidence for rookie pitcher Merkin Valdez who has just joined an impressive array of talent in the San Francisco Giants bullpen.

Amazon: Watching Baseball Smarter - A Professional Fan's Guide by Zack Hample

Description
Rookie pitcher Jonathon Niese couldn't have picked a better year to join the Mets with a new stadium, a fresh roster, and a collective hunger amongst fans and players alike for victory, 2009 will undoubtedly be an historic year. And, until that great Opening Day in Shea, I recommend boning up on the finer points of the game . . .

Amazon: 2009 Official Rules of Major League Baseball by Triumph Books
First to recommend
Description
I played softball, so I am a bit out of my league when it comes to the rules of the baseball game. And, apparently, I am not alone. This guide (currently on pre-order, for delivery in late April) is published anew each year. The rules, as the times, they are a-changing. As rookie pitcher Jeff Niemann is probably well aware, now that he is in the bullpen with the MLB's Tampa Bay Rays (who were, not so very long ago, known as the Tampa Bay DEVIL Rays.)

ASSOULINE: The Ultimate Collection - Barbie by Yona Zeldis McDonough
First to recommend
Description
A keepsake book of 128 pages and 69 illustrations will only scratch the surface of the cultural and sartorial history of Barbie. Yet, the book itself, complete with linen box, is a work of art in and of itself. And the historical and mythological reflections of Yona McDonough breathes life into Barbie's inanimate form. Of course, we Barbie disciples have always known she was no mere doll.
