F-Troupe Men's Sneakers
First to recommend
Description
The solution to my Keds/Converse conundrum, these black corduroy-style tennis shoes are perfect all-the-time sneakers. They're slightly more elegant than black Chuck Taylors and more edgy than classic Keds, with a streamlined cut and a deep black velvet colorway that make them match everything. Sure they're made for men, but I would pick them up in a UK men's size 7 and hope for the best. (about $117 at f-troupe.com)

Jones Bootmaker Swing Heels
First to recommend
Description
Made from soft kid suede, these kicky 1950's-style heels are made to look hot new and worn out from the dance floor. Why can't they make them like this anymore? These are classics from Jones Bootmaker in the UK, who've been cobbling in London since 1857, but they'll FedEx to the States. (about $60 from Jones Bootmaker)

Picture yourself flying across the Tuscan countryside on a bicycle just after dawn, sun-kissed hair flying behind you, sunglasses perched on your nose just so, and a book by Calvino in your little rucksack (yes, rucksack). You know what you'd have on your feet? (now $99 at Bird)

Madison Harding Closed Toe Canvas Wedge
First to recommend
Description
Every few months, I revisit my highest heels and think, "Why don't I wear those more often? Those are hot!" Three hours on a dance floor, of course, and I remember why they've been collecting dust. These could solve that problem; in candy red and sexy steel, they've got style to spare and work your legs like killer stilettos, but they're really wedges made of forgiving canvas ($60 a Shopbop.com)

Yves Saint Laurent Canvas Flat
First to recommend
Description
Let's be honest - preppies know how to rock summer. They have a shoe designed for lounging on boats! A whole category of clothing for cruises! And they invented tennis whites! And tennis, maybe! Their only downfall is conformity - case in point, the popular (and boring, boring, boring) Tory Burch ballet flat. Take it to the Continent with these dreamy YSL numbers - perfect for a little romp through St. Tropez. ($120, on sale at Barney's)

Description
Why don't I have these yet? I've been a Converse naysayer for a while now - I've always thought they make your feet look weirdly long - but after trying on a pair just now, I take it back. They run big, so you can get a half size down and make your feet look smaller, plus they are SO COMFORTABLE I AM PRACTICALLY ASLEEP. ($42 at Zappos - with free shipping! I fit in an 8, in case anyone wondered)
Ed. note: Small children in Converse = cool small children. Put Chucks on your tiny sibs!

Dru New York Red Flats

Description
These are my second-favorite flats, after the black Delman's. They're canvas, which makes them durable and easy to dress up or down, and also means they are one mean dancing shoe. ($100 at Active Endeavors)

Delman Traveler in Black Nappa

Description
These classic, comfortable, elegant black flats have everything I look for in a flat - which is probably why they're $295 at delman.com.

Frye Classic Harness 2-Ring Boots

Description
There's nothing quite like pulling on a hefty pair of Frye boots to get your day going in the right direction, or to give you a sudden urge to pick fights with guys bigger 'n you. Even if you're a lady like m'self. ($325 at Frye.com - you might want to try secondhand)

Laredo White Tassel Cowgirl Boots
First to recommend
Description
They just don't make cowgirl boots like they used to, which is why you won't find my classic white Laredo tassel boots in any store, but you might find them on eBay - last I checked there was one pair available up there. They're hot, comfortable as heck, and have a Pavlovian association with Debbie Does Dallas for men nationwide.
