Description

"The Witches of Eastwick" is casting a new spell at ABC.

The Alphabet web gave a put pilot order to a new version of the supernatural tale, to be penned by Maggie Friedman ("Dawson's Creek"). The new "Witches" is said to be a variation on the 1987 feature of the same name.

The movie, which starred Jack Nicholson, Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer, was based on the John Updike novel about three women who turn to witchcraft after losing (or booting) the men in their lives. They conjure up a devil-like character, who then proceeds to seduce all three of them. (via Variety)

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde with an Introduction from Camille Cauti

Fast-rising Brit thesp Rebecca Hall has joined the cast of Ealing Studios’ Oscar Wilde bigscreen adaptation “Dorian Gray.” Hall has been turning heads for her perf in Woody Allen’s “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” and appears in upcoming “Frost/Nixon” and “Bronte.”

As previously announced, Oliver Parker-directed “Dorian Gray” toplines Ben Barnes as Dorian Gray and also stars Colin Firth. Ealing’s Barnaby Thompson produces.

Other cast members announced Aug. 7 are Ben Chaplin, Emilia Fox, Rachel Hurd-Wood, Fiona Shaw, Maryam D’Abo, Pip Torrens, Douglas Henshall, Caroline Goodall, Michael Culkin, Johnny Harris and newcomer Max Irons, son of Jeremy Irons. (via Variety)

Marvin the Martian: 50 Years on Earth

Warner Brothers is going to make a feature film starring Looney Tunes star Marvin the Martian! The movie will be a blend of live action and CGI. Marvin was born in 1948, but he assures us that he is in tip top shape to star in the film.

RoboCop 20th Anniversary Collector's Edition DVD

Description

MGM just greenlit a new RoboCop film, so all of you half-man, half-machine fanatics should be very excited. The film is being fast-tracked for a 2010 release. The original film's producer Mike Medavoy will return for the remake and Darren Aronofsky will direct (after he finishes up The Wrestler).

If you didn't get enough Wicked from seeing the Popular musical One Short Day, you may be able to soon capture the show For Good! Thank Goodness there are rumors of a film adaptation of this Wizard of Oz-based musical. Wonderful!

Robotech Protoculture Collection

Veteran screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan has been hired to write "Robotech," Warner Bros.' adaptation of the anime classic. Additionally, Akiva Goldsman and Chuck Roven are boarding the project as producers, joining Tobey Maguire and Drew Crevello.

A sprawling sci-fi epic, "Robotech" takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion centers on a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship's energy source known as "protoculture," and the planet's hope for survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots. Wake the Dead by Steve Niles and Milx and Chee

Holding Pictures has acquired rights to Steve Niles’ graphic novel “Wake the Dead” and set James V. Hart to write the script and Jay Russell to direct. Niles wrote the graphic novel “30 Days of Night.” Holding Pictures principal Charlie Lyons will produce, fully finance development and likely fund the film through principal photography. Producers David Permut and Steve Binder will develop a feature titled “The Colonel” based on the book about the man with shadowy origins who reinvented himself as the Svengali behind the world’s most famous entertainer. Parker started his showbiz career as a hustler on the carnival circuit before promoting Minnie Pearl and Eddy Arnold. Parker built Presley into a global music and film star — and took 50% of the spoils. (via Variety)

Marvel Comic Books Runaways Vol. 1 Hardcover

Description

"Runaways" is the latest Marvel Comics book to get the big-screen treatment from Marvel Studios. Brian K. Vaughan, who co-created the series with artist Adrian Alphona, is writing the adaptation, for which Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige will act as producer. Vaughan is also a co-producer and writer on ABC's "Lost."

The heroes in "Runaways" are relatively new, with the comic series launching in 2002. "Runaways" follows a group of teenagers who find that some family secrets are bigger than others when they discover their parents are actually super-villains. Running away from their homes, the teens band together and begin a journey of discovery, both of their parents' origins and of their own inherited powers, while trying to make up for the evil done by their folks.
