James L. White and Boom Studios have attached Mekhi Phifer’s Facilitator Films to produce “Hunter’s Moon,” a live-action version of White’s graphic novel, with Phifer in the lead role. White is in final negotiations to adapt “Moon” as his first feature screenplay since the biopic “Ray.”Phifer (NBC’s “ER”) will play a stockbroker who takes his son on a weekend hunting trip in the woods. The teen is kidnapped, forcing the father to do the criminals’ bidding to save the boy’s life.

Warner Independent Pictures has signed “House” executive producers Garrett Lerner and Russel Friend to adapt Brock Clarke’s best-seller “An Arsonist’s Guide to Writers’ Homes in New England.” The dark comedy from John Wells Prods. centers on Sam Pulsifer, a man who accidentally burns down Emily Dickinson’s home and kills two people in the process. After 10 years in prison and a series of personal and professional disasters, he returns home to live with his parents, only to discover that he’s suspected in a series of nearby fires at historical landmarks. He attempts to find the real criminal and uncovers some family secrets as the mystery unfolds.

Fox 2000 is set to bring Brian De Palma’s “The Fury” back to the bigscreen. The label has tapped Brian McGreevy and Lee Shipman to pen a contemporary reimagining of the 1978 supernatural horror film. New version will center on a young man with heightened kinetic powers who is abducted by the government in order to take advantage of his special gifts. Original, starring Kirk Douglas and John Cassavetes, was based on John Farris’ 1976 novel of the same name. (via Variety)

The Incredible Shrinking Man by Richard Matheson

Brett Ratner is in negotiations to direct Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment's remake of "The Incredible Shrinking Man." Brian Grazer is producing the project, which has Eddie Murphy attached to star.
An updated version of the best-selling novel and 1957 sci-fi classic starring Grant Williams, "Man" is taking the comedic approach to the fantastical material, telling the story of a famous Las Vegas magician who is put under a spell that causes him to shrink. He must find a way to reverse the spell before he gets so small that he "disappears." (via The Hollywood Reporter)

DreamWorks has acquired rights to the Japanese manga “Ghost in the Shell” with plans to adapt the futuristic police thriller as a 3-D live-action feature. Story follows the exploits of a member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission that specializes in fighting technology-related crime. Created by Masamune Shirow, “Ghost in the Shell” was first published in 1989. It went on to generate two additional manga editions, three anime film adaptations, an anime TV series and three videogames. The second anime film, “Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence,” was released in the U.S. by DreamWorks in 2004. (via Variety)

Breaking Ball Films’ Scott Abramovitch and Lonny Dubrofsky have acquired feature rights to William F. Diehl’s pre-WWII spy novel “27,” with Abramovitch adapting. Story, originally called “The Hunt,” centers on a wealthy American ex-bootlegger who attempts to thwart a Nazi agent who plans to kidnap a group of VIPs and hold them hostage in exchange for President Roosevelt’s promise that the U.S. will stay out of the war. Diehl, who died in 2006, was best known for thrillers “Sharky’s Machine” and “Primal Fear,” both made into features. (via Variety)

Fox Animation has optioned the mummy-themed young-adult book “The Anubis Tapestry: Between Twilights” by Bruce Zick. Fox plans a loose adaptation of the novel, which kicks off when a mummy’s curse condemns Dr. George Henry’s spirit to the Egyptian Underworld. While trying to free him, Henry’s son Chance plumbs the depths of the Underworld and encounters a variety of monsters. The tome, which creates a detailed mythology, was published in 2006.

The Capture (Guardians of Ga'hoole, Book 1) by Kathryn Lasky

Zack Snyder is set to direct “Guardians of Ga’Hoole,” an animated feature film based on the series of children’s books by Kathryn Lasky. Village Roadshow is making the film and Warner Bros. will distribute. Pic is set in the Forest of Tyto, where Barn Owls live in peace until their kingdom is threatened by an evil that could destroy their home. Script was written by John Orloff (”A Mighty Heart”) and John Collee (”Master and Commander”). The pic will be produced by Zareh Nalbandian, with Donald DeLine, Deborah Snyder and Lionel Wigram exec producing. The intention is to execute in Sydney, Australia, through Animal Logic, which worked with Village Roadshow and WB on “Happy Feet.” The film is on a fast track and is likely to be ready by 2009 or 2010. Universal Pictures has acquired the recent L.A. Weekly cover story “How to Get Divorced by 30″ and will use the article by Sascha Rothchild as the basis for a romantic comedy. Marc Platt will produce the picture with Dana Fox, writer of Fox’s upcoming Ashton Kutcher-Cameron Diaz starrer “What Happens in Vegas …” and 2005’s “The Wedding Date.” The author, using the disintegration of her first marriage along with those of five other friends, posits it’s best to begin with a “starter marriage” before finding your ultimate mate. She lays out 15 steps to guide readers to ending the first marriage. The U comedy will focus on a heroine who road-tests the “starter marriage” premise and then finds her perceptions redrawn by reality and relationships.
