HTC S710 Smartphone

First to recommend

Description

Of all the gadgets I cover every day I'm particularly interested in cellphones and I've owned more over the past few years than I'd like to admit. My latest is the HTC S710 which is one of the first smartphones to run the new Windows Mobile 6 operating system. The phone is small enough to fit in most pockets but also includes a fantastic slide out keyboard with a full Qwerty layout. With built-in Wifi and mobile versions of Word, Excel and Internet Explorer it usually allows me to leave the laptop at home.

Apple 8GB iPod Nano

3 people recommended this item

Description

It's been praised to death but when you're out for a walk in the city there's really no better way to enjoy your music on the go than with an iPod. The touch sensitive scrollwheel makes navigating the player's polished OS a breeze and even though iTunes may have its pros and cons it's still a great way to organize your MP3 collection and find new music. And even though the 8GB Nano is the same price as the larger 30GB iPod Video I still recommend the Nano for its compact size and fantastic battery life.

SCOTTEVEST SeV Performance Shirt

First to recommend

Description

With pockets full of keys and coins you don't want to risk scratching up your iPod Nano but at the same time you don't necessarily want to carry it in your hand all day either. SCOTTEVEST is a clothing company that specializes in creating garments for people with a high-tech lifestyle. For the summertime I recommend their basic SeV Performance Shirt. Not only are they made with a fabric designed to draw moisture away from your body but they also include hidden pockets and channels for carrying an iPod and hiding headphone cables. And instead of just slapping a pocket on the inside the SeV shirts are actually engineered with a Weight Management System to ensure your iPod won't stretch the shirt or pull on your collar while carrying it.

Nintendo DS

Description

When you're stuck on the subway or streetcar battling rush hour traffic the Nintendo DS is a great way to kill time. The innovative touch screen and Nintendo's desire to reach out to a mainstream audience have resulted in some great games and a lot of success for the system. I'm particularly fond of puzzle games that don't require a lot of invested time but can be picked up and played at a moment's notice.

Tom Bihn Imago Messenger Bag

First to recommend

Description

While backpacks can hold a lot of gear they tend to get in the way when walking in a crowded area or when riding a packed subway car. This is why I prefer messenger style bags and particularly the Imago from Tom Bihn. While the company has a large selection of bags for almost any need I find the Imago to be the perfect size for holding all the gear I carry on a daily basis. It's made with lightweight but high quality materials and the little touches like a bright green interior for easily finding items on the bottom of the bag tell you a lot of thought went into its design. And for you organized types there's plenty of easily accessible pockets both inside and out.

Nikon Coolpix S7c 7MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom

First to recommend

Description

You never know what you're going to see when wandering around a large city in the summer so I definitely feel it's important to have a camera on hand at all times. While I use a Nikon D70 SLR for any serious photography it's unfortunately a bit heavy to carry around every day. The Nikon COOLPIX S7c however is an extremely compact point and shoot camera that's easy to use while still providing plenty of options for getting that perfect shot. It even has built-in Wifi allowing you to immediately transfer your shots to a computer or laptop as fast as you can take them. While it does forgo an actual viewfinder it makes up for the loss with a particularly large LCD display.

Timbuk2 Triple Card Wallet

First to recommend

2 people recommended this item

Description

When you're out in a t-shirt and shorts enjoying the sun you don't want a massive wallet hanging in your pocket. Particularly when it makes you an obvious target for those looking to pick your pocket. The Triple Card Wallet from Timbuk2 is a streamlined alternative to that leather filing cabinet you've been carrying around. A pocket on either side can be used to carry credit cards or ID and a hidden pocket on the inside is great for storing cash. And thanks to its low profile the Triple Card Wallet can even be carried in the front pocket for an added level of security.

Dahon Smooth Hound Folding Bike

First to recommend

Description

Bikes are a great way to get around a busy city or as just a leisurely way to relax. But anyone living in a downtown apartment or condo knows that storage space is usually at a premium, not to mention trying to crowd onto a busy subway with a bike in tow. The Smooth Hound from Dahon folds down into an easy to transport package and only weighs 10.8 kg allowing it to be easily carried in an included shoulder bag. At the same time it provides all the functionality and features of a full size bike and even looks like something most people wouldn't be embarassed to ride.

Piaggio MP3 Scooter

First to recommend

Description

While the Vespa has recently seen a resurgence in popularity in crowded urban areas I have to say I'm more of a fan of its new sibling, the Piaggio MP3. Like the original Vespa the MP3 is compact and small which makes navigating crowded streets and finding a parking space a lot easier than with a car. But unlike the Vespa the Piaggio MP3 has a unique three wheeled design. It almost looks like a tricycle going backwards since it uses two wheels in the front to allow for greater stability and balance particularly when cornering. While the Vespa may turn a few heads the Piaggio MP3 will probably result in confused stares.

iRex iLiad E-Book Reader

3 people recommended this item

Description

As busy as the city can get there's still a surprising amount of time when you find yourself having to wait. So another great way to kill time is to catch up on your reading. The iLiad ebook reader from iRex Technologies allows you to carry hundreds of books, magazines and even web content in a very compact package. And the e-ink technology that's used means the reading experience will be as close to a book as you can get without the papercuts. While Sony was the first to market with their own ebook reader I still recommend the iLiad for its extensive feature list and support for multiple memory formats.
