No Cities Left by The Dears

First to recommend

Description

I don't own this on vinyl, but the Dears have overrun my iPod. If you've never heard them, they're a bit like Belle and Sebastian and Interpol mixed together. Most of their songs are about some sick love triangle and the male and female vocals together sound great. If you're going to sample them, try looking for the song No Cities Left. It really showcases the way they work together as a band.

In Reverie by Saves the Day

First to recommend

Description

I love this album so much, and I think Saves The Day's sound is really different. This band has one of the most disgustingly upbeat light sounds that actually sounds spectacular, because they balance it so well. A lot of their songs have really dark lyrics and that builds depth.
Wednesday the Third is one of my top ten favorite songs ever. It's extremely melodic and the lyrics kind of revolve around a more poetic side of death. This band is amazing if you like off beat things, and I would suggest this album if it's your first.

Fabulous Muscles by Xiu Xiu

First to recommend

Description

This is my favorite record by Xiu Xiu, basically because they toned down the dance beats and started to figure out a new way of doing what they're really good at. Very industrial/pop/experimental. I think Crank Heart is the best song on this album, so if you're going to listen to them, check that song out. It's very background-noisey the best way.

Microcastle: Deerhunter

Description

Mmmmm, Deerhunter. Cryptograms was a hard album to follow but I think they did a great job when they released Microcastle/Weird Era Continued. I think this band is pretty unpredictable, but if you're looking for something a little different, listen to Cavalry Scars, a strong piece from this album. Also, the song Saved by Old Times includes vocals from a member of the Black Lips. Very forest/pop.

Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come as You Are, In Bloom, Lithium are just some of the iconic songs on this album. I mean, honestly, Nevermind was the voice of our generation... wow that sounds so deep.

Amanda Palmer - Who Killed Amanda Palmer

First to recommend

Description

Regardless of how I feel about her as a person, Amanda Palmer's first solo record was really good. The ex (maybe? i think they're just on hiatus) front woman for the Dresden Dolls released this album last year as a ballad esque/ painfully raw reintroduction into the music industry on her own. With guest cellist Zoe Keating and a very put together line of strings and percussion, she seems to be doing very well. Other people did lend a hand, like Ben Folds as a producer and Neil Gaiman (well known in the comic book world) helping with a matching coffee table book.
The name of this album is a shout out to Twin Peaks, and the cover work really captures to vibe of the music, which features Amanda on the piano and vocals, with lyrics centered around struggling to keep your head above water in relationships/friendships/waking up in the morning. Basically the perfect album for the day nothing goes right and you want to put your head through drywall.

Apologies to the Queen Mary by Wolf Parade

3 people recommended this item

Description

The depth of this album can make your head hurt, in the best way possible. Wolf Parade spins that submersive Canada-indie genre around with this record, Apologies to the Queen Mary. Dear Sons and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts is an unstoppable track, and really shows how sickly on point these guys are.

The Blood Brothers - Crimes

First to recommend

Description

It's been a few years since the final record and disbanding of the Blood Brothers, but I still listen to this album almost every day. Released in '04 (I think), Crimes was the first collection to get them quite a bit of mainstream notice. Their sound is incomparable, the connection between the two main vocalists voices is mad in a way that it shouldn't work, but it does. And the instruments take art-destroyer punk and beat it down to something completely unfathomable. My favorite song from this record is called Rats and Rats and Rats For Candy, and I think it's a pretty good example of what to expect from a lot of their music. Lyrically, it tells a pretty twisted story of a pack of rats that hollow out and live in a girl, then take all of her things and move on to look for another home. The guitars create a static infused tangled mess with the percussion, which makes it that much more audible during the abruptly quiet, soft sections of the song. Once you understand what these guys are about, it gets pretty addictive. A+

Devendra Banhart - Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon

First to recommend

Description

Devendra Banhart takes up a lot of my ipod/life and Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon put me in that position. This guy is like a breath of fresh air (not because his music was on Juno. maybe if I start a blog, it will revolve around my hate/problems with that movie. I digress...). Seahorse, my favorite song from this record is basically a perfect example of what Devendra's music has to offer the listener, a sort of multi-interpreted look back into the 60's and 70's, in the sense that he's suggesting a more simple way of being, while the almost impending doom of the climax of the song erupts into a sound that I haven't heard in a while. I've lost a lot of hope in the music being produced lately and though this came out about two years ago, it's restored a little of what I needed.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - By The Way Vinyl

First to recommend

Description

I got this album for Christmas when it came out (I was twelve) and since that day, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have been my favorite band. If you haven't listened to them before, this album is strange starting point, but amazing none the less. Since the late eighties, the Chili Peppers have evolved so much album to album in front of the 9 million or so fans with an eye on them. They put By The Way out in 2002 and showed everyone something unexpected. Can't Stop, one of the radio singles and an all around killer song, lets out the unbelievable intertwining of the guitar and bass with intricate tangled melodies that build the foundation for the song. The percussion flows through with an impeccable consistency, something that is a little too uncommon these days. The often cryptic lyrics weave rhymes that provide a little throwback to the funk/jazz era they went through in the earlier years of the band. This whole album is arranged in a way that carries the emotion so well, open to close this record is 100% perfect.
