The Church of Baseball - a list by hanahula

About this list:
My favorite baseball movie isn't even about professional baseball, but about a minor league team known as the Durham Bulls. Perhaps you have seen "Bull Durham". If so, you will recognize the phrase I stole for this list. If not, you may already know how many unspoken rules and rituals and prayers exist for and about all levels of baseball, from T-ball to the bush leagues to farm teams to the "Show". It is, in its own inimitable fashion, a religion.
Qualifications:
I have my very own pink glove.
The Code: Baseball's Unwritten Rules and It's Ignore-at-Your-Own-Risk Code of Conduct by Ross Bernstein

Description
If you, like me, wonder exactly what leads to baseball brawls, this book will help you understand the game behind the game of baseball. Prime example: although no blood was shed at the Red Sox game against the Yankees last night, Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain definitely got under the skin of Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett. The two were never on the field at the same time, but certain unwritten rules were at play. This book explains many of them and, in so doing, makes watching baseball all the more intriguing.

Washington Nationals Personalized Jersey with Inaugural Season Patch
First to recommend
Description
Relief pitcher Joel Hanrahan has been with the Washington Nationals since 2006 but did not actually make his Major League debut until July 2007. And a little more than one year later he has achieved major acclaim as the team's Roberto Clemente Award nominee.

Authentic Manny Ramirez Home Jersey with 50th Anniversary Patch

Description
Well, Manny "being Manny" devolved into Manny being just plain mean towards the end of his career with the Boston Red Sox. His departure was not as sad as it might have been given his recent belligerent behavior towards teammates, employees and fans. Perhaps with a shearing of his locks and the guidance of his new manager, Joe Torre, Manny will regain his composure, return his focus to the game and become Manny "just being Manny" again.

KooKoo Bear: Vintage Baseball Scoreboard Giclee Print
First to recommend
Description
Although I discovered this print in a children's catalog, the vintage design is mature enough for a family or game room, particularly for anyone who is a player and/or fan of any level of baseball.

Uncommon Goods: GROUND RULES BASEBALL GLASSES - SET OF 4
First to recommend
Description
In my parent's house, baseball is serious business. Turning the station, blocking the view, cheering for the opposing team . . . all grounds for dismissal from the family room. Best to set the rules in place before the game starts with this cheeky set of drink glasses.

Dick's: Hurricane Batting Trainer

Description
Get your swing back into form with the help of this trainer. No need to enlist the assistance of a pitcher, no balls to chase. Simply swing away. The number of revolutions the stick makes will tell you how fast (or slow) you are swinging. Includes a home base for aligning your stance.

Boston Red Sox: Opening Day Ticket Auctions

Description
The Red Sox season has already begun with a win over the Oakland A's in the Tokyo Dome, Tokyo, Japan. But the fun really begins when the Sox play their first game at Fenway Park at 2:05 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, 2008. Whether you are a Sox fan or just a diehard baseball fanatic, enter to win a pair of tickets to a great afternoon at the ballpark. All proceeds will benefit the Red Sox Foundation, a charitable organization providing hope to cancer patients, the needy and young athletes in the Boston area.

Description
Given her undying love of the New York Yankees, I am guessing that Miranda would much prefer to wear a baseball hat to the beach or pool than any other kind of hat. At least this one is in white and pink.

It's not just a ballpark. It's not just a landmark. It is a state of mind. Lunacy, perhaps. Competitive, for sure. But all in good Major League fun.

Major League Baseball Auction: 2008 American League Celebration - Silver Statue of Liberty
First to recommend
Description
2008 is the final year that the Yankees will play in their current stadium . . . as well as the last year the All-Star game will ever be played in this venue. So, Lady Liberty is all dressed up with American League color in honor of her champions . . . and awaiting her highest bidder. At 8.5 feet, she will make one lovely memento for someone with the adequate square footage . . . and spare change.
