About this list:

My favorite baseball movie isn't even about professional baseball, but about a minor league team known as the Durham Bulls. Perhaps you have seen "Bull Durham". If so, you will recognize the phrase I stole for this list. If not, you may already know how many unspoken rules and rituals and prayers exist for and about all levels of baseball, from T-ball to the bush leagues to farm teams to the "Show". It is, in its own inimitable fashion, a religion.

Boston Red Sox - 2008 Season Begins

The Boston Red Sox traveled all the way to Japan's Tokyo Dome to play their first game of the 2008 season against the Hanshin Tigers. Although not nearly as raucous as Fenway Park, the Japanese fans made an honorable effort to welcome the Red Sox with such familiar traditions as the singing of "Sweet Caroline" and greeting Kevin Youkilis as "Yoooooook". The Sox will stay in Tokyo for several more days, playing against the Oakland A's on Tuesday and Wednesday. Let the games begin . . .

Little League Baseball: 2008 Little League World Series

Now taking place in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, USA are the games of the 2008 Little League World Series. Teams from the United States include: Hagerstown Federal (Maryland), Mill Creek (Washington), South Lake Charles (Louisiana), Jeff/GRC American (Indiana), Shelton National (Connecticut), Waipio (Hawaii), Citrus Park (Florida) and Canyon Lake (South Dakota). The International divisions C and D include teams from the Caribbean, Mexico, Europe, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, Japan, Canada and Latin America. Both the International and United States Championship games will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2008.

Although the United States baseball team defeated China 9-1 in yesterday's game, they did not come away from the Wukesong Baseball Facility unscathed. U.S. outfielder Matthew LaPorta was struck in the head with a pitch, fortunately walking away with a mild concussion. This occurred after LaPorta collided with China's catcher, Wang Wei, as LaPorta approached home plate. Two of China's coaches and the pitcher who struck LaPorta were ejected from the game. The United States faces Chinese Taipei today, Tuesday, August 19, 2008. Let's hope this game is a little less ugly.
