Penderyn Single Malt Whisky

Updated Jun 4, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

Single malt whisky from Wales. Doesn't sound like a great idea initially, but once you taste it, you'll be convinced. I've only had this once, but am overcome by a strong urge to go out and find some more.

A friend of mine who was at a whiskey festival recommended this to me and I owe him for that.

J-list has many different bento boxes, but this deluxe set really caught my eye. With reasonable sized containers and included mug and chopsticks, this can be your lunch box and express your style at the same time.

Take this to the grocery store or the farmer's market and fill it up with tasty things. Or just use it to tote things to the beach. Whatever you use it for, it is a stylish and natural alternative to the plastic and mass manufactured bag.

There's something romantic about this. (via Decor8)

Cook's Illustrated Magazine

Updated Jan 12, 2008

6 people recommended this item

Description

I cat sit for friends of mine who have a subscription to Cook's Illustrated. I'm always excited to hear that they're going away.

Cook's Illustrated chronicles experiments in cooking. How to make the best layer cake, the best barbequed ribs, or the best apple pie. If you need to get a pepper grinder, they're there testing out ten different grinders and telling you exactly which one does what. The magazine is a rich source of well constructed articles on cooking, baking and the products you use in the kitchen.

It isn't gimmicky or fancy. It just does the job. (via Patty's house)

Tastebook - create your own cookbook

Updated Dec 17, 2007

1st to recommend

Description

This has been mentioned on a couple of blogs recently (101 Cookbooks and Apartment Therapy) and I think the concept is great. You have access to Epicurious' recipe collection as well as the ability to add your own and can put together a collection of 100 recipes for $35. This is a great housewarming, holiday, wedding or hostess gift.

There are other services out there that do something similar, but I don't think any of them have the power of Epicurious behind them.

Lärabar Bars

Description

I like eating one of these before I head out for my brush with insanity known as the evening commute. It keeps me fed enough until I get home.

They are a bit strange in terms of texture - they are fruit, nuts and spices held together with dates. They are: natural, kosher, vegan, uncooked, and so on.

I like them.

My sister and I did these as kids and my parents still have them. This is a great project if you have kids. Since you can send in pretty much anything as long as it is cut to the right size, this could also be a good design project. You know those neat plates you've been craving that cost too much? You could recreate something similar or do a wild design of your own.

This is my favorite ginger beer. Spicy, feisty, gingery. I haven't been able to reliably find it recently, but if you ever see it in the store and are a fan of the spicy happiness of ginger beer, plunk down some cash and get it.

Amarula Cream

Updated Oct 20, 2007

1st to recommend

Description

My little sister spent some time in Malawi and Zambia a few years ago and found this cream liquor. She brought me a bottle home and suggested that I use it to make Amarula milkshakes. It is reminiscent of Bailey's Irish Cream but with a butterscotch flavor. It is quite sweet and works nicely in a modified white russian. (via My sister)

Dark 'n Stormy

Updated Oct 19, 2007

Description

I love ginger beer and have spent an unreasonable amount of time in various grocery stores and liquor marts seeking out new and spicy ginger beers. Ginger ale no longer really tastes like ginger. Ginger beer is the way to go.

How could one improve ginger beer? Just add rum.

Dark and stormy indeed.

Various spice sets in convenient containers. This is the kind of thing that your friend would want as a housewarming gift, or your sister who likes cooking would be into for her birthday, or I would want so I stop knocking over all the containers and ziplocs of various spices that are in my cabinets.

A chai tea set looks like an especially nice gift.

Kuhn Rikon Peeler

Updated Jul 23, 2007

2 people recommended this item

Description

It will cost you less than five dollars. It will peel effortlessly.

It ain't complicated, it just works.

For some reason, I always have trouble removing the skin from Champagne mangoes. I do the knife cut around the longest circumference and then pull the skin off technique usually, but due to the thinness of the skin, I always end up swearing. I think once a long time ago I tried using a regular peeler to peel mangoes and it ended badly. I've also tried the cutting off the two side pieces and then cubing and popping pieces out. Nope.

This peeler can peel champagne mangoes. Happiness. (via The staff at Fantes)

How to Cook Everything

Updated Jul 22, 2007

2 people recommended this item

Description

This is a good collection of recipes. Sometimes when you read large-scale cookbooks you're struck by the number of recipes that seem like bad ideas or use obscure ingredients, or take six weeks to perform. Bittman doesn't seem to have too many of these. The recipes are concise and easy to follow and are ideal for beginners and talented amateurs alike.

Not only is this a good resource, but Bittman writes well and his humour is enjoyable.

KitchenAid Food Processors

We just got this as a combined birthday present a couple of weeks ago. I've never owned a food processor before and pretty much thought that some good knives and my mom's old blender were a fine replacement. Colour me surprised.

Things I like doing with the 12 cup KitchenAid food processor: grating carrots, mincing shallots, grating cheese, making bread, making salsa.

The Making of a Chef: Mastering Heat at the Culinary Institute

Michael Ruhlman took classes at the CIA (Culinary Institute of America) and mainly followed the general curriculum that regular students take there. He conveys some of the mystique of being a chef - the obsession with food and devotion to one's work.

Fante's Kitchen Wares Shop

Updated May 20, 2007

1st to recommend

Description

This weekend I went to the Italian Market Festival in South Philly. To get away from the insanity for a few minutes we turned into Fantes. A half hour later with a new vegetable peeler, silicon tongs for the teflon coated pan, a citrus reamer for those of use whose hands are wimpy about squeezing lemons, and a coffee grinder, we walked out wishing that we could buy everything.

Fantes is a great cook's supply store which stocks things ranging from the basic (kitchen timers, wood spoons, knives) to the esoteric (canelle molds, pannetone paper thingies, a pickle grabber). The people who work there know their stuff and are willing to show you the better but cheaper item. This means that you'll be coming back for years to come.

They also have a website for those of you who don't live in Philly.
