If you're in the market for a puppy/dog, why not try your local SPCA first? Overpopulation is rampant with lots of breeds, and neglected/abused dogs need good homes, too.
Also, the SPCA is always in need of donations and/or volunteers. Call your local office and make a difference today!

It's amazing how many of my friends won't go out and spend five bucks on a personalized pet ID tag. My dog has gotten out of the house twice in the past four years, and both times neighbors blocks and blocks away have caught her, read the phone number, and given me a call to come get her.
It's entirely possible that I'm the world's worst dog owner, having let my dog run rampant through the neighborhood twice in four years, but whatever. Things happen. I once got lost at a mall because I wandered off; does that make my parents bad people? No. I just means I'm sneaky-good!
Anyway, these tags are a lifesaver.

Chuckit!

Description
I love playing toss with my dog, but let's face it -- bending down and picking up that slimy tennis ball time after time gets old.
With the Chuckit!, you just snatch the ball up and whip it 50 yards without breaking a sweat. I love this toy, and my dog (Peaches) gets great exercise. Best of all, the Chuckit! fits any regular sized tennis balls, so when you accidentally throw one over the neighbor's fence, just slap another one in there and keep going.

Circle T Leather Leads

I can't tell you how much I despise those extendable/retractable leashes that people love to use. The mechanism to lock the line breaks, the line itself breaks, and worst of all, if you aren't paying attention, your dog can get a good 30-foot head of steam going before yanking your arm out of its socket.
I prefer a short (4 foot) leather leash like the one pictured. They give you better control of your dog, and they last forever.

Finishing Touch Combo Brush for Dogs

Description
I'm not a big fan of wire brushes, since they can cause my dog discomfort. The solution? A dual-sided brush, with thick bristles on one side and rounded pins on the other. My dog absolutely loves rounded pin brushes -- she thinks she's getting a massage -- and the bristle side is good for smoothing and taking care of shedding problems.

American Rawhide Bacon Basted Bones

Description
I like giving Peaches rawhide bones because they last a while, are good for her teeth, and keep her from ever lingering too long when I leave a pair of shoes on the floor. Add in the flavor of bacon, and how can you go wrong?

Drinkwell Big Dog Fountain

Description
I don't recommend having dispenser-style food bowls for dogs, because they will (or, at least mine will) overeat to the point where they just balloon up like Oprah Winfrey in between liposuction appointments.
However, I do think having a lot of filtered water "on tap," as it were, for dogs is a great idea. This reservoir aerates your dog's water and only needs to be filled a few times a week (less if you get a larger reservoir, available at the same site).

Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks? A few months ago, I got bored with making my dog (8 years old) sit for treats.... so I taught her to lay down, instead.
Then, at my nephew's 1st birthday party last weekend, someone brought over a frisbee. Within 6 hours, I had Peaches chasing it down, catching it out of mid-air, and most amazingly, releasing the damn thing after she'd brought it back to me.
Throwing a frisbee to a dog -- it may seem cliche, but once your best friend has mastered it, it's a lot, lot, lot of fun.

Advantage Once-A-Month Topical Flea Treatment for Dogs & Puppies
First to recommend
Description
Love dogs, but can't stand fleas? Advantage makes a great little tube of liquid that you apply to the back of your dog's neck once a month. It's a little unsightly until it dries, but your dog will thank you for getting rid of those pesky little buggers.
