GIOVANNI FRIZZ BE GONE 2.75 OZ

First to recommend

Description

As a Black woman, I fight with my hair. I have it relaxed (straightened), but I live in an area of the country with high humidity all spring and summer long. Sometimes this type of weather, goes into the fall as well. When the weather is like this, my relaxed hair gets frizzy. When I sweat too much, my hair gets frizzy. When I'm in the shower too long...yes...my hair gets frizzy.

There are a million and one products out there that claim to control frizz. I have probably tried them all with limited success. You put too much of any of these products on and the hair gets weighed down and looks limp and greasy. You can also forget about body and movement. However, I have been impressed by Giovanni Cosmetics Frizz Be Gone. I still have to be careful about the amount I use, and I would hand down this caution to anyone using this type of product. Just a drop or two of this rich, organic serum, rubbed into hands and distributed throughout hair (concentrating on the ends), will do the job. It can be used on wet or dry hair. I have only used it on my hair when dry so far. It can also be used with a blow dryer or flat iron for straightening. It imparts shine, smoothing and control to frizzy hair. Granted, I have not waited until my hair is COMPLETELY out of control to use this. When it gets to that point, I call my stylist. (via ebay.com)

Sunmaid Raisins

First to recommend

Description

I add about a tablespoon and a half of raisins to my oatmeal ever morning. They have a ton of potassium and iron in them. I also like the texture that it adds to my oatmeal. I know, I know...I should be eating organic ones. Believe it or not Sunmaid does make organic raisins, but they are still too pricey considering how much I consume on a regular basis. I end up at Costco, buying bulk. LOL (via sun-maid.com)

Quaker Oatmeal

3 people recommended this item

Description

I was buying the organic stuff at my local Whole Foods Market for a long time, but it was just more cost effective to buy it bulk at Costco. I wish all of my food could be organic. However, I'm not made of money, as they say. This stuff does the job, too, and hopefully I'm not sacrificing too much by not eating organic oatmeal for breakfast. Here are some statistics on what eating oatmeal on a regular basis can do for you:

"Oatmeal is heart healthy. More than 40 scientific studies show that eating oatmeal daily may help lower blood cholesterol. In fact, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted the first food- specific health claim to Quaker Oats for use on oatmeal: Soluble fiber from oatmeal, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease.

Oats can help to lower LDL (the "bad" cholesterol) blood cholesterol levels. Though most of its cholesterol-lowering power comes from the soluble fiber beta-glucan, recent research suggests that other components of oats - such as the protein and natural antioxidants-may also contribute to heart health.

Emerging research suggests that oatmeal may help maintain healthy blood pressure levels and may help promote healthy blood flow. Oatmeal, as a source of fiber, may also help to slow the rate of digestion, which may help to maintain healthy blood sugar levels, as well as curb appetite. Having energy sustained through the morning may be another benefit of making oats a regular part of a daily diet.

The role of whole-grain foods, like oatmeal, in the prevention of chronic disease is becoming more evident. While diet is just one of several factors which can affect diabetes, a study published in the Sept 2000 issue of the American Journal of Public Health suggests that the consumption of whole grain foods, like oatmeal, on a regular basis may contribute toward a reduced risk for Type 2 (adult onset) Diabetes. And Yale researchers found that eating a large bowl of oatmeal may improve the harmful reduction in blood flow that may happen after eating a high-fat meal. (Am Journal of Preventive Medicine, Feb 2001)." (via quakeroats.com)

SweetLeaf Stevia

First to recommend

2 people recommended this item

Description

I started using Stevia in my diet because I didn't think is was necessarily a good thing to use too much Splenda and Nutrasweet as subs for sugar. I still use some Splenda, but as for Stevia, its been used for around 1500 years or so with no bad press. Plus, it has no calories and is 100% natural.
Stevia is also said to help control blood sugar levels, according to my naturopath. (via healthyshopping.com)

Driscoll's Organic Raspberries

First to recommend

Description

I eat a cup every morning. I read recently that raspberries are one of the most filling foods that a person can eat. It must be true, because between the oatmeal and raspberries, I'm not ready to eat again until around 4 o'clock P.M. Also, the difference in flavor between the organic and regular is truly amazing. The organic is sweeter and more flavorful. I wish this weren't the case because of price and availability, but I could probably use less chemicals in my diet anyway. Check out the nutrition stats that I got from the website:

A one-cup serving of raspberries provides:

60 Calories with 1g Protein and only 1g Fat
50% of your day's supply of Vitamin C
32% of your day's supply of Fiber
6% of your day's supply of Folic Acid
4% of your day's supply of Iron
4% of your day's supply of Calcium
2,789 ORAC Value

Not bad considering how much I dig on these. (via driscolls.com)

Tea Tree Therapy Cleansing Bar | Desert Essence

First to recommend

Description

I have this bar next to my sink in the bathroom, as well as in the shower. I use it to wash my hands instead of a traditional antibacterial soap. As Tea Tree Oil is a natural antiseptic (germs and microorganisms hate it!) During the summer, I use it in the shower on the "sweatiest" areas where bacteria, and therefore, odor would tend to set up happy little communities. It leaves you squeaky clean, but may to too drying to use all over your body depending on your skin type. Although, this superior product does contain Jojoba oil and Aloe Vera. So, it does condition as well as thoroughly cleanse your skin. (via desertessence.com)

Ped Egg

Description

I hate to admit that anything "As Seen On Tv" works. However, this little gadget really does. You just have to be careful that you don't rub any spots on your feet raw. That having been said, if you have rough areas on your feet that a loofa won't take care of, this certainly will with less mess than a regular callus file. (via pedegg.com)

Bass 7 - Inch Raw Loofa

First to recommend

Description

An easy way to help moisturizers absorb after your shower. How? By getting rid of the layer of dead skin with your dry loofa before you get into the shower by gently massaging the skin surfaces in a circular motion all over. Don't get too happy though...I've rubbed myself a little raw in spots before. (via webvitamins.com)

Pangea Organics Lip Balm - Pyrenees Lavender with Cardamom - 0.25 oz

First to recommend

Description

This is one of the best lip balms that I have ever tried, and I have tried many. Most have petroleum added, which seems to make my lips peel and prevents any decent ingredients from full absorption.

My second qualm with most lip balms is the fragrance. This one is heavenly. The lavender and cardamom are a surprisingly subtle combination.

The cardamom is apparently a natural antiseptic, like tea tree oil. It also contains an organic oil that I had not heard of before, called Tamanu. It's naturally anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial, which therefore, aids in rejuvenating chapped, dry lips.

It also contains Jojoba and Hempseed oils, as well as Shea Butter. This wonderful balm comes in a large tube instead of the traditional "skinny". Making it fit for a variety of sizes and shapes of lips. I love this stuff! (via skin-one.com)
