Taste of Japan #6 - Instant Japanese Soup Sampler Party Packs (
First to recommend
Description
Miso soup is now the only 'safe' way to indulge in soy apparently: health pundits have now declared that 'Asian people traditionally only eat fermented soy'. (Never mind that tofu is not fermented.) Anywho, for people who can't be bothered to make miso soup from scratch, these pop-into-a-bowl and add hot water packs as convenient as tea bags. And like all good Japanese convenience foods, they don't need refrigeration. (Hint: don't try to open up a pack in a Swiss train compartment if you want to avoid people staring and muttering 'what's that smell??')

Japanese Nissin UFO instant yakisoba noodles
First to recommend
2 people recommended this item
Description
UFO (pronounced you-ho, er I mean fo) were the original instant yakisoba noodles. (These are yakisoba noodies, not ramen like the product description says). Instant noodle cups are a main food group for struggling students, lonely single guys and the married salaryman sent off by his company to a long-term assignment away from wife and family (a situation known as 'tanshin funin', or 'dad gets malnutrition and is too overworked to even think of having an affair even if he's away from home, while mom stretches her wings').

House - Instant Curry Sauce with Vegetables - Hot 7.4 Oz.
First to recommend
Description
Curry? A snack food? Sure it is. Let me now introduce you to another Japanese meal - (o)yashoku. This is a late-night snack often consumed by those students studying hard for the all important University (or High School) entrance exam. Around midnight, the poor student's tummy starts to growl. What to eat? Why not a vacuum-packed boil in the bag packet of curry over some reheated in the microwave leftover rice? Those vacuum-packed curries are really mighty tasty, and can be kept around without refrigeration, making them perfect for dorm rooms and "yasu geshuku" (cheap student apartments).

Morinaga Okinawa Black Sugar Caramel
First to recommend
Description
Made from a "black" sugar from Okinawa, this is a really delicious caramel in elegant, classic packaging. Not carried that much at regular Japanese grocery stores outside of Japan unfortunately, so I have to buy it by the uhm..caseload...(I'm so ashamed)

UHA - Shigekix Super Lemon Flavored Soft Candy - 25g
First to recommend
Description
There is a sub-category of the snack world in Japan that is geared towards keeping you awake and alert. The poor overworked salaryman or student swotting towards the dreaded university entrance exam are the consumer targets. This candy belongs in that category. It's basically a chewy lemon gummy candy that's coated with super-sour powder that makes you go"WHA!" Pop one in your mouth and you are ready for another half hour of tedious paperwork/coding/studying.
