Description

I don't actually have time to surf anymore... and when I do have time I sorta alreay know where I want to go based on what's happening in the water and how many people I feel like punching in the face (because that's how we roll in L.A.) but I bought this book because it made me laugh when I was flipping through it in the bookstore: They called out a certain Ho'wood producer as being a kook and made other apt-and-vaguely-cruel cracks.

Worth getting if you know your spots and if you don't... and a decent option if you're looking to upgrade from Bank Wright's guide (even thought he wins in the "author whose name most qualifies him to write a surfing guide" category).

Scott Anderson Custom Short Board

Description

Scott made me a 6'2" three years ago and I named her Scotland. Though there have been many boards from as short as 5'7" to as long as 6'8" since, she's still my favorite gal. Scott, whose shop is in Marins del Rey, knows what works in L.A. surf. (via Anderson Surfboards)

I wish you could meet Martha Washington, my pale pink Rusty shortboard. I got her on President's Day a few years ago and she's the Commander in Chief: 6'0", thin as a chip, turny but definitely not a flip flopper. (via Rusty)

Description

Why I love this Speedo:
1-Double draw strings keep the bottoms AND top in place
2-Bottoms are a little boyish, which is so cute. Sometimes training bikinis can be either really high-waisted or, worse, high-legged a la Olivia Newton John.
3-Lap swimmers may have to suffer through a lifetime of tanlines over the shoulders, but at least torsos don't have to be chlorine-white all summer.

I'm so fast in my pearly goggles! OK, fine. I'm not really that fast... but they probably do make me fastER (a little?)... These fit my face really well... I didn't know there were women's-specific goggles until I discovered these. So glad I took the plunge. (Did you like my bad pun?)

Kiehl's Sunscreens

Description

I use four different Kiehl's sunscreens: a Vital Sun Protection spray for surfing because it doesn't sting my eyes, All Sport sunscreen for skiing because it doesn't freeze, the sunscreen in their Ultra Facial lotion twice a day and lip balm with sunscreen. Why the insanity? I'd rather be forever applying sunscreen and forever young than the alternative. (via Kiehl's)

I can't wait to try all their naturalicious flavors like lime, blackberry, cucumber and apple. You can order them online right now... or email them directly and ask where they're for sale near you.

San Franciscans will probably have the easiest time getting their thirsty palms on them since the company's based there. Luckers.

Salty Girls products are designed for surfer gals but, because of their botanical ingredients and supermoisturizing abilities, are great for everyone. The flavor is crisp, especially when cold... but what's really smart about SmartWater is its design: the trompe l'oeil frisky goldfish swimming inside is fantastic.

So, yeah, the electrolytes are great and all, but what I really love is seeing the goldfish sitting on my desk. (via notcot)

Description

Drop a Nuun electrolyte tab in a bottle of water for faster absorption and something like twice the electrolytes of Gatorade/Powerade... and zero sugar. It's portability is genius and the light flavor is refreshingly palatable. (via Nuun)

Description

Metro Mint lives at the flavor midpoint between peppermint tea and Scope: strong but not too strong. I just discovered it this winter and can't wait to have some on an August Sunday in the backyard while lying out (slathered in SPF 30, natch). It will, I expect, lower my core temperature immediately upon contact with my innards. Graphic, perhaps, but this is powerful stuff. (via Metro Mint)

Grain Surfboards The Waka Fish

Description

Grain = gorgeous... though I haven't seen one of these in the water yet, I covet them. They haven't really made it to the west coast yet in a big way (or to So Cal). But these boards tie into three big trends: retro boardriding is what "all the kids" are into; DIY is getting bigger and bigger (you can get a build-it-yourself version of these boards for a third of the price of the readybuilt ones); green, always a natural fit, is gaining traction in outdoor sports.
