Surviving Fashion Week - a list by BunnyShop
Options for This Page
About this list:
Here's the thing about Fashion Week in New York—it's supposed to be seven days. It's actually ten. And it feels like 100. It's only Sunday, and I'm ready for it to be over—to bad there are about four dozen more shows in the next five days, innumerable divas pushing through the line, and a few looks so gorgeous that they make the whole thing worthwhile. Here's what I pack in my Fashion Week survival kit—and what I depend on, when I get home, to remind me of the fantastic world that awaits when it's done.
Qualifications:
I'm working nine fashion shows this season—and seeing loads.

A.P.C. Dress with pleated waist
First to recommend
Description
I thought it was an urban myth—how everyone wears black to all the Fashion Week events. All I'm saying is that I wore a red-and-white stripe American Apparel cardigan to work today, and my boss almost had a conniption fit. (What can I say? I was supposed to be office support, not in the Tent.) I have spent the last three days in black, though—and I love this perfect APC dress because (a) it gives my black Cheap Mondays a break and (b) it's classic APC—easy to dress up or down. And P.S.—it doesn't photograph well, but it's adorable on.

Stella boots from Twenty Two Shoes
First to recommend
Description
I love a black dress with tough brown boots, like these from Twenty Two, my favorite Bay Area shoemakers. And of course—real divas might be happy to go all day in five-inch heels, but I need to go from downtown to uptown and back again: It's flats or nothing.

Lux I'll Be Your Mirror Minidress

Description
I'm a sequins and mini-dress kind of girl, and I love this, especially at the price—$14.99! I can spill things on it at the after-party without crying over it later.

Gewoon's Rosette
First to recommend
Description
I have a fairly basic gray coat from H&M—on a limited budget, it was the best way to ensure I'd get maximum use out of it. It's just a bit too basic for the tents, though, so I like to give it just a bit of color with one of these felt rosettes from Gewoon. They're a bit unfortunately reminiscent of Angela from Project Runway (the one Jeffrey was constantly bullying), but they're splashy and colorful—I also like pinning mine (the pink one) to a canvas tote bag.

Borba Clarifying Skin Balance Aqualess Crystalline System, Pomegranate
First to recommend
Description
It's so tempting to drink nothing but Diet Coke, but that just freaks me out after a few days. I get bored with just water, so I started using these Borba packets for flavor but also for a vitamin fix—it's got a mammoth amount of a few key ones, and for some reason I have an easier time remembering this than downing a Centrum every morning. The last time I did Fashion Week without vitamin supplements I spent the following week in bed with CourTV, nursing a cold.

Je T'Aime Brooklyn tote

Description
There's no way I can compete in the handbag competition—unless I want to, you know, redirect my rent (and about $200 more) to pick up the same Chanel tote my boss has. Thanks, but no thanks—I'm so much happier going the (independent) designer route with this Je T'Aime Brooklyn bag. Not only does it remind everyone that BK's actually the coolest borough (and my home)—I just spent about $1488 less than my boss on my bag, and—surprise, surprise!—it holds about the same amount of stuff.

Canon PowerShot 7.1 Megapixel Digital
First to recommend
Description
An absolute necessity—I always seem to be upgrading my Powershot right before Fashion Week. It's tiny, slides into a pocket, has fabulous battery life, and is perfect for videotaping the models as they come down the runway—it actually shoots at a resolution higher than you can broadcast on YouTube, so for Internet use it's perfect.

Alyson Fox's Dinosaur drawing
First to recommend
Description
This Alyson Fox watercolor and pencil is the only piece of art I've ever owned—and I love it. She's amazing, and I recommend not only her artwork but her clothing line, A Small Collection, as well. This drawing is just so beautiful and so bizarre, with the girls and the cape and the dinosaur. After a long and hectic filled with people yelling at me because they're not on the RSVP list, it reminds me that as far as work goes, none of that matters—what matters is what you create.

On the Shortness of Life
First to recommend
Description
There's load of downtime waiting for each show to begin—a good book is critical. This one, by the Stoic philosopher Seneca, is perfect, mostly because it talks a lot about how to have a rich and meaningful life, in clear and easy to understand writing. It's a good thing to think about while sitting around for two hours waiting for a designer to get his act together long enough to send some models down the runway.
