Made in Ohio (on an intimate level) - a list by zoesah

About this list:

Stop the department store madness! These gifts are hand-picked by me from places I simply adore. Most are from Northeast Ohio, so they aren't the normal fares you'll find on the web. They represent all the places I cherish most in Ohio, and trust me, I find the coolest places.

Qualifications:

Uhm, I'm from Ohio!

Liberty Pottery

First to recommend

Description

Liberty Pottery is sold in the small historic canal town of Roscoe Village. What used to be a port for the Ohio and Erie Canal in the 1800's, Roscoe Village was rebuilt in the 1960's (after being destroyed in the flood of 1913). Costumed artisans work, like the blacksmith, in the orginial 19th century buildings. All employees wear period clothes.

Each piece is handmade and painted (lead-free glaze). I'm not one for the folksy look, but I do like this glaze (and the willow tree to the left). There is also a distressed orange that is quite lovely. They can also personalize - examples on website. Beautiful, quality work.

MAPLE SYRUP-Hocking Hills, Ohio

First to recommend

Description

This may be teasing, but they will be out of the syrup until Feb-Mar. Hocking Hills is my favorite place in Ohio with its recessed sandstone "caves," rugge cliffs and hemlock forests. They tap their trees in the early spring and produce the freshest syrup around.

Description

WE stop here on the way to Roscoe Village. It's just a really great place to stop each year, mainly because they have a good italian restaurant and the tasting bar is long. I've gotten into reds now, but this is a really safe bet for a woman that likes white. It's sweet, yet not too sweet. It's definately the one of the best of the whites. Haven't met anyone to dislike it yet.

Description

Amish-made, heirloom-quality, cherry wood mission bench. When it comes to furniture, the Amish have it. Granted, I don't take to the pure oak look that they rely on, but that stuff is the best quality around. I love the cherry for this bench.

Kimono Art Display | Japanese Kimono Event | Ohio Kimono Display

First to recommend

Description

Kimono as Art: The Landscapes of Itchiku Kubota features forty oversized kimono created by Master Kubota. Kimono will tour the United States for six months with only two stops: San Diego, California and Canton, Ohio.
The centerpiece of the display is his 30-piece landscape kimono panorama, “Symphony of Light.” An homage to nature and the passing of seasons, “Symphony of Light” consists of fifteen kimono depicting autumn and fifteen depicting winter. The ten additional kimono in the exhibit celebrate Kubota’s reverence for the natural world of Japan.

Ok, so this isn't MADE in Ohio, but this is a huge deal with Ohio being one of only two shows in the United States. Give a gift of a cultural trip. (via kimonoexhibit.com)

Is this hot or what?
I'm just minding my business at the health food store and I see this name on a car beside me. I wrote it down and discovered some talented gals right in my own backyard! (mother/daughters).

They use their OWN design to make gorgeous bags from re-purposed products...this one...a coffee burlap bag.

They use their OWN design to make gorgeous bags from re-purposed products...this one is created with coffee burlap bags, neckties and linen, and is smaller so it can be used as a purse or multi-purpose bag.
