Gjetost Cheese

I have walked by this cheese for YEARS! Always curious, never willing to plunk down a few dollars to try it. When I saw that Alyson recommended it, I knew it was time for me to get with the program!

The next time I was in the store I picked up a cube.

Ah, the power of cheese, err, ThisNext!

Gjetost is a curious cheese. Though sugar is not on the list of igredients, its kinda sweet. The cheese melts away like a caramel. There is a good reason why the packaging suggests you cut it with a cheese plane - too much and it becomes overwhelming. The taste is quite mild at first but the goat milk comes out in the end. If you have with apples and pears, I imagine the goat taste would be supressed.

Its good stuff. Its definitely a cheese you need to check out if you love cheeses. (via Alyson)

Hooked on Kinder bars? Ready for a new addiction? Try Kinder Bueno. These are absolutely excellent hazelnut filled wafers covered in chocolate only as the Germans can do it. Dont try to understand the name, just eat the chcolate!

Toffifay (in the US), Toffifee (elsewhere) is a curious on the chocolate / hazenut combination. Each piece is a firm caramel cup filled with nougat, a whole hazelnut and topped with a drop of chocolate. The texture is a nice mix of creamy (chocolate) and gooey (caramel). Though Toffifay is of European origin, they market it under this name to the US market. Still, few people know about it.

Some say that its meant to compete with Ferrero Rocher - I honestly think they are both great, though they are too different for serious comparison.

Description

Take a whole roasted hazenut and encase it the creamiest nutella-like hazenut chocolate creme. Then put the two into a crispy wafer shell and dip it all in creamy milk chocolate. Finally, for good measure, sprinkle some chopped hazelnuts over the chocolate and you get Ferrero Rocher.

Aside from being one of the most labor intensive confection, it is one of the best I know. Each layer of this sphere of goodness represents a different texture and favor. Each piece really is like a sensory journey.

Ferrero is the company that brought you Nutella.

Soft, fluffy, creamy & garlicy goodness. Boursin Cheese makes a fantastic spread on toast or crackers. Boursin is flavorful without being heavy. The cheese itself is of the Gournay variety and it rocks my world!

If you try it, you'll probably overindulge, so pack some mints!

My holidays wouldn't be complete without at least one (or half a dozen) Panettone cakes!

Panettone is a sweet, fluffy and fragrant pastry of Italian origin. The soft buttery dough gets its signature taste from candied orange and lemon zest. You'll find an occasional raisin here and there too.

This tall Italian fruit cake goes perfectly with a hot beverage on a chilly winter afternoon.

Try it - you're bound to find a new holiday tradition!

You can find some online but look around locally first. You'll probably find it for way under $10. I have tried many of them and not a single one was disappointing.

Nestle Aero Milk Bar

Description

"Bubbles Wrapped in Chocolate" is the slogan for this fantastic British treat. When I first saw these I made fun of how Nestle figured out a way to pack half of a chocolate bar with air and sell it for the same price as any other. My skepticism melted away just like the creamy chocolate. True, the inside of the bar is filled with tiny pockets of air, but it does make quite an experience. The bubbles help create a curious perceived texture that is unrivaled by anything else. You get to eat a whole satisfying chocolate bar without all the guilt.

McVities Original Digestives

Digestives are one of those British things. The name refers to an old belief in the antacid properties of the baking soda used to make this biscuit. Today, digestives are probably one of the most consumed foodstuffs in the queen's land - about 51 per second.

In my opinion, they are just fabulous!

Digestives are quite yummy, wholesome and filling. They are made of coarsely ground brown wheat flour. They are subtly sweet and their texture is quite unique. Digestives are a little dry on their own so they go best with tea or coffee. Because they are made with whole wheat, they contain a good dose of fiber.

McVitie's Digestives are the best in my opinion and now come in a ever widening variety.

The US travel writer Bill Bryson described the chocolate digestive as a British masterpiece. I couldn't agree more.

Bounty Chocolate Bar

Description

Bounty bars were available in the states a while back but they competed with Almond Joy and Mounds. You can still find them in international supermarkets, especially those specializing in Brit fare.

At first glance Bounty and Mounds seem to be the same: chocolate covered coconut. The Bounty bar is superior because its chocolate is richer and more creamy and the coconut is more moist and

When tasted side by side, the Mounds bar is dry and lacks sophistication. Bounty's chocolate shell and coconut filling is richer and creamier. The two flavors contrast better because the darker chocolate.

Of course I still love my Almond Joy / Mounds but I prefer Bounty any day!
