Program | The Cinefamily

First to recommend

Description

I feel lucky to have seen many great silent movies at The Cinefamily during their first year of operation in 2008. I'd love to rave about the trill of experiencing the talented and charming Bob Mitchell on piano and organ, and the amazing eclectic line up of wired, and wonderful films, but instead, I want to point out the publication that introduced me to this revival house. The Cinefamily program. It's a compelling collection of film fact, images, and musings on movies on the The Cinefamily schedule. So far comic book artist have been commissioned to create original works for each cover, and tucked inside each program is a beautiful pin-up image that adorns the pull-out calender. Each time the schedule comes out I cant wait to open it up to see what new layout, or imaginative juxtapositions of image is to be seen. As of this writing all of the programs of 08 have been uploaded to the Cinefamily website and can be downloaded as PDFs. But I'm holding on to my printed version. ;)

Ivan’s Childhood (1962) - Andrei Tarkovsky

First to recommend

Description

The Criterion Collection have done much for the home cinema experience, beyond the selection of must-see film, and the care taken in reproducing immaculate sound and picture, Criterion also creates wonderful packaging for each DVD. One of my favorites is Andrei Tarkovsky's 1962 film "Ivan’s Childhood".

About the film:

The debut feature from the great Andrei Tarkovsky, Ivan’s Childhood is an evocative, poetic journey through the shadows and shards of one boy’s war-torn youth. Moving back and forth between the traumatic realities of WWII and the serene moments of family life before the conflict began, Tarkovsky’s film remains one of the most jarring and unforgettable depictions of the impact of violence on children in wartime.
