Grid Index - Carsten Nicolai

First to recommend

Description

Grid Index is the first comprehensive visual lexicon of patterns and grid systems. Based upon years of research, artist and musician Carsten Nicolai has discovered and unlocked the visual code for visual systems into a systematic equation of grids and patterns. The accompanying CD contains all of the grids and patterns featured in the publication from the simplest grids made up entirely of squares to the most complex irregular ones with infinitely unpredictable patterns of growth, as editable vector graphic data files. Use it to map out the underlying grids of any image or form and to create recurring geometrical grids in graphic design - an essential reference for designers, visual artists, architects, researchers and mathematicians.

Fraktur mon Amour - Judith Schalansky

First to recommend

Description

"Fraktur Mon Amour" reproduces 300 variations of Blackletter, ranging from historical fonts to contemporary reinventions, in a sensuous, beautifully crafted, hot-pink prayer-book style catalog that is destined to become a fetish object for designers and type enthusiasts. Each Blackletter font is presented on a full page along with its complete alphabet, date of origin, the name of its designer, and original foundry. On the facing page is a composition created from that font that explores the subversive beauty of this unique typeface. In addition, 137 of these fonts – including four created exclusively for this book – are collected on an enclosed CD (Mac and PC) for free private and restricted commercial use. "Fraktur Mon Amour" is the winner of several awards including the Type Directors Club of New York’s 2007 Award for Typographic Excellence.

U2 360° tour: Stage Logo Button

First to recommend

Description

Its a perfect icon for U2's massive 360° tour, this symbol looks like a jet, or a rocket, or a starship all of which are incorporated into the design of the 360° spaceship like stage. In the future when we've all forgotten U2 and their 2010 tour will this button become some sort of a Rorshock test--it's a image of Saturn? No it's a logo for Chicken Foot! Oh no I've got it! It's it a toothpick with a twist of lemon?

Ironic Sans: In a political campaign far, far away...

First to recommend

Description

In the fall of 2008 a single work of art reignites the ongoing dialogue on the issue of fair use and the arts. In this case it is the image of Luke Skywalker (Star Wars/Mark Hamill) placed within a graphic the context Shepard Fairey's famous Obama Hope 2008 U.S. Presidential campaign poster. The result is many things, parody, political commentary, pop iconography, and idol worship. (via FFFound)

HOPE: Barack Obama Campaign Poster - By Shepard Fairey

First to recommend

Description

You'd have to have been there at the time, posters and stickers designed By Shepard Fairey changed the atmosphere surrounding the 2008 U.S. Presidential race. Maybe it was the power of simplicity, the power of a gentle but inspirational word, or maybe it was the masterful use of image making that made this poster as recognizable as the Che Guevara image which came before it, or maybe it was because the subject was of a leader that wasn't looking down on the people, anyway it was a poster that got my hart beating with the longing for positive change. Thank you Shepard Fairey for this.
