Road Cycling 101 - a list by hwilson

About this list:
I came to cycling late in life, but unlike the "former runners", triathletes, and casual bikers -- riding my road bike is my passion! I decided to create this list after I made a similar list about Spinning for a co-worker. But, as a true cyclist - I believe that all spinners should aspire to become cyclists and really learn what the sport has to offer. Because there's nothing quite like hammering out a 100 mile bike ride with your closest group of friends -- you talk, eat, and suffer - together. Enjoy!
Qualifications:
Once U ride, U have 2ride-once U have 2ride, U tell others!

Rudy Project Rydon Sunglasses
First to recommend
Description
Rudy Project Rydon sunglasses are awesome for cycling. With the Polar 3FX polarized lenses, you will never have to worry about glare. These are my primary sunglasses for cycling - they are light, they never fog, and they look great. Best of all, if you scratch your lens, Rudy Project will replace them for a nominal fee. This replacement program doesn't seem like much until you see your $200 cycling sunglasses bouncing off the pavement.

Neutrogena Active Breathable Sunblock, SPF 45

Description
I'm not sure if it's due to global warming or the strength of the Southern California sun, but the melanin in my skin is no longer keeping me from getting sunburned. Ouch! So, I rely on Neutrogena Active Breathable Sunblock to keep my face, nose, ears, and neck from getting too much sun. I use the cheap stuff for my arms and shoulder, but I only use the good stuff for my face. Neutrogena sunblock is PABA-free, hypoallergenic, and non-comedogenic (which means it won't clog your pores and cause zits). Now, get out there and enjoy the outdoors!

OAKLEY HYDROPHOBIC LENS TREATMENT KIT
First to recommend
Description
Oakley quietly introduced one of the coolest sports innovations of 2007 - the Oakley Hydrophobic Lens Treatment kit. This kit is a coating system that makes any pair of glasses or sunglasses completely water, sweat, and snot resistant when you're out cycling or playing whatever sport gets your heart rate up. I've been using this product since I found out about it and it's awesome. I use it on my beach volleyball sunglasses and my cycling sunglasses.

Blackburn Carbon Fiber Frame Pump
First to recommend
Description
This carbon fiber pump is very lightweight, but has a full barrel allowing you to get your tires back up to a full 120 psi after a flat. I've owned this pump for over four years and it has never let me down.

Castelli "Free" Bib Cycling Shorts
First to recommend
Description
These bib shorts are like butter! They seriously will make your butt feel like that 75 mile ride you just finished was a ride around the block. They look great and even better - they feel great! If I ever hit the lottery, this is the only brand/model of cycling short that I will ever wear. :-)

LeMond Racing Cycles: Zurich
First to recommend
Description
My first bike was a Lemond Zurich back when they were made of steel. I think it is one of the best all-around bikes that is a perfect blend of price and performance. This bike is by no means cheap, but like the list says "it is worth the money!" If you're new to the sport of cycling or just looking for a new bike, i recommend you either splurge or save your money to buy a Lemond Zurich.

Chamois Butt'r Lubricant
First to recommend
Description
One of the first things you experience when you start in the sport of cycling is butt pain. You try different brands of bike shorts, you try different saddles, you even try different positions -- of course none of these things will work. You're a new cyclist and having a sore butt is part of the process. Then, you discover, what I call Butt Butter - better known as Paceline Product's Chamois Butt'r! From that point forward, your butt will love you!

Spin Class 101 - Clif Shot, Razz Sorbet flavor, 24-pack
First to recommend
Description
During your first few spin classes you may get gassed or just completely bonk during the class. So, I always recommend that all people attending a Spin class use an energy gel after about 30 minutes to keep their exertion level high enough to get the maximum benefit from a Spin class. Razz Sorbet is my favorite flavor of Clif Shot. And, Clif Shot is the best tasting, easiest gel to digest that I've ever tried.

Michelin Pro2 Road Bike Race Tires
First to recommend
Description
I've had a few sets of Michelin Pro2 race tires over the years and they are great. They roll smooth, straight, and they never seem to get punctures. If you're looking for a solid tire that delivers mile after mile - the Michelin Pro2 is the one.

Spin Class 101 - Shimano Men's Mountain Bike Shoes - SH-M122B
First to recommend
Description
The temptation for a person attending their first Spin class is to buy a cheap pair of cycling shoes or to wear their running shoes and to use the toe clips. Both of these options are horrible and may not only ruin your experience in your Spin class, but could cause you physical injury (if your foot slips off the pedal). I recommend buying a nice pair of mid-range mountain bike shoes with SPD cleats. Clipping in to the SPD pedals on the Spin bike will give you the complete push/pull action of outdoor cycling and give you a more complete workout.
