About this list:
Great bands from San Francisco (and some great places to see them at too)! Some of these bands are together, some are no longer, but they all rock and you need these CD's! San Francisco is not all about the Summer of Love.....screw that, its all about the rock baby!

The Substitutes - Exploding Plastic Inevitable
First to recommend
Description
These guys make SF proud! Imagine a twin guitar attack ala Thin Lizzy with a singer who has a sexy growly voice ala Glen Danzig and you get the picture of why the Substitutes are so awesome!

Big Midnight - Everything For The First Time

Description
Big Midnight is the continuation of the fantastic Richmond Sluts! If you love Iggy, Johnny Thunders and the New York Dolls, you are sure to love Big Midnight. This is not quite as sleazy as the Richmond Sluts CD, but it is still fantastic!

Thee Parkside: San Francisco's Premier Dive Venue

Description
How I love Thee Parkside. It is choked full of divey goodness. One of my fav. places to see bands (and a fun place just to go for a drink). Easy parking, the bartenders are great and generous and I've seen some great bands there. A fun place to hang out. If the Black Halos or the Chelsea Smiles ever play here again, make sure to check them out!

San Francisco's Best Dive Bars: Drinking and Diving in the City by the Bay
First to recommend
Description
I love dive bars. The are fun and unpretentious (any type of club with "Ultra" in the name makes me cringe). Give me a good jukebox with some loud rock and roll and a place where I can get a bottle of Newcastle. If I can see some live bands there, even better. I've been to at least 5 or 6 of the places recommended in this book and was never disappointed. They all accurately live up to their description. They did a really overall good job with the recommendations. I really like Lucky 13! Even for those of you who live here, this is good if you want to venture into a neighborhood other than the ones you usually go out in.
Also, I can't remember if it is listed in the book or not, but if you want a great dive bar with live music, check out my favorite, Thee Parkside.

Baby 81: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
First to recommend
Description
The latest CD from SF's very own Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. I really like this CD a lot. I really, really loved last year's Howl. I loved the earthy, down in the bayou feel of it.This CD is back to the heavy sound (which I also love) of their first two CD's. A definite must have.

The List - This is the most complete guide to shows in the SF bay area, collected by Steve Koepke

Description
If you are a live music junkie like me and live in the SF bay area, you can't afford not to subscribe to the List. You can get it emailed directly to you (approx. 1x per month). It focuses mainly on rock, punk and alternative shows. There are so many bands playing and clubs in the city, this makes it easy to keep track of all the shows that are going on. I could not live without the List!

Music by women who are true Mavens (and a few who are new on the scene and appear to be up and coming Mavens, IMO).
