Don't Get Drunk On Crap (or Holiday Wines) - a list by ASewell

About this list:

Some people I know will drink "whatever it takes", if you get my meaning. However, as one gets a bit older, the ability to recover from drinking takes more time and is a lot harsher. So, why even go there? If you drink the good stuff, this lessens the probability that you will become ill in the first place. So here is a list of some choices of well-made wines/Champagnes that taste good, go well with food and are far from being MD20/20.

Chateau Mont-Redon Cotes-du-Rhone 2006

First to recommend

Description

I almost hate to include the following winemaker's notes. Only the most "pretentious" of winos would probably find it useful. However, some of the comments will give you a mental image of what the wine may be like. I have heard very good things about this wine, but actually haven't tried it yet - yet. Give me time ;-) Anyway, with that said, here are the winemaker's notes:

"The style of Chateau Mont-Redon Cotes-du-Rhone is one expressive of its "terroir," and vinified to exhibit deep, clean, intense fruit, soft, balanced tannins and early approachability. Deep violet in color, the wine shows aromas of dark berries and raspberries which are confirmed on the full, succulent palate. These are offset by slight grilled notes and nuances and licorice, which carry into the persistant finish."

Pretty pretentious, right? However, at the same time, read carefully it does give one an idea that this is a full, deep, fruity wine that doesn't take you a few glasses to get used to. Sounds pretty good to me, but I'll let you know. (via wine.com)

Hawk Crest by Stag's Leap California Merlot 2005

Finewinehouse.com Winetasting Notes:

This Merlot displays great dimension with aromas of blueberry, ripe plum and black cherry accented by hints of voilet, anise, pepper and dark chocolate. On the palate, upfront flavors of black cherry, plum and dark berries mix with medium soft tannins, sweet vanilla and well-integrated oak. A rich, silky texture and long, lingering finish are the final rewards. (via finewinehouse.com)

Ménage à Trois - Reds

First to recommend

Description

I drank far too much of a delightful red last night. I didn't buy it for the provocative name, but for the very reasonable price ($10) and for the fact that I enjoy red blends.

Menage a Trois from the Folie a Deux Winery is a smooth blend of Cabernet, Merlot and Zinfandel. It's funny --- the label on the front of the bottle says: "Surrender to the seduction of dark, rich berry with a hint of pepper, a lush lingering finish leaving you wishing for more...", and they're right! After my friend and I had killed the bottle, I had no problem asking him to go out and ask pick up another bottle.

I highly recommend this one, with no reservations, but be careful... It's so easy to drink that you will find yourself wanting more...just like the bottle says! (via folieadeux.com)
