Saving Private Ryan (1999)

Description

Tip: If it's a work/school night, don't start watching Saving Private Ryan after midnight even if you think you'll just watch a little and then go to bed. It won't happen. The action, special effects, and drama will keep you glued to the movie for the full three hours. I know it's hard to imagine Tom Hanks as a leader of troops in a war, but it turns out he is just the right actor for this character and he does an incredible job. The World War II battle scenes are second only to Band of Brothers.

I really enjoyed the Firefly series and recommend watching the whole series before watching this movie. The Serenity movie is like a great 2 hour episode of the series. A really great episode.

At this point, you already know that you have to watch anything that Anthony Hopkins is in. I don't know how he can play so many different characters in so many different movies so well while not really changing the character from movie to movie, but it works for me.

This movie is a meandering, mostly heartwarming tale based on the real-life adventures of a New Zealand tinkerer. I hadn't read any of the history behind the story so it was fairly suspenseful.

George Clooney, John Tuturro, Tim Blake Nelson and John Goodman are just amazing. I love how the genius Cohen Brothers weave the tale of Homer's Odyssey into this lovely, funny, bizarre Southern American tale. I love love love the Cohen Brothers and this does not disappoint. And of course, you HAVE to get the soundtrack.

I didn't get it the first time I saw it either. You have to want to understand it. I think thats what makes a great film, making you want to study / understand it.

Matt Damon is totally underrated. There, I said it. I don't care who knows.

"Inspired by true events" leaves a lot of room for creativity and as interesting as this movie is, I bet reality is even more interesting. Too bad the true stories like this will never be made public. I bought this one because it's a great movie and Amazon is selling it for under $10.

The science fiction plot is weak, but the floating "Lost In Translation" feel of this movie and great visual imagery make it worth watching. Just don't ask too many questions.

I'm afraid I had my expectations set at "The Matrix" when I want to watch this in the theater, so I thought it was only OK. My friends were blown away by it and I remember one comment about "the best movie of the year" (so now your expectations are set unreasonably, too).

In retrospect, I think it probably was pretty good and I'm going to rent it again and try to watch with fresh eyes.
