Michael Pollan - In Defense of Food

Description
"Eat food. Not to much. Mostly vegetables."
In Defense of Food, a good-for-you and good-for-earth eater's manifesto from food intellectual Michael Pollan who, last weekend in NYT's Sunday mag, recommended that we all grow some of our own food and, several weeks ago, said that rising grain prices aren't the worst thing because maybe, if we're lucky, people will eat fewer Cheeto's. (Or something like that)

I don't actually have aphids but I've always wanted to release a batch of ladybugs in the garden just because. It would be an awesome Eric Carsle happening... a yard full of grouchy ladybugs.

EcoForms Biodegradable Pots

Description
I love this concept: gorgeous pots made from corn husks (or something similarly sustainable) that, after you plant them, biodegrade in your garden.
Gardening is about leaving bits of earth better than you found them. These match that ethos.

Its bite is deadly! It's the best all-in-one tool for the garden... pull on your gloves and let loose on your patch of dirt with this puppy and there's no telling what will ensue: a little loosening of the soil or total mayhem. (via gaylatrail)

Kitchen Garden: What to Grow and How to Grow It
First to recommend
Description
Here's what I love about Kitchen Garden: the charts. Turn to any vegetable and learn when to plant each variety and when to harvest it. Yes, this information is all available in the HEAVY Western Garden's book, but it's so clearly presented in Kitchen Garden that I find myself more inspired when using it than when getting carpal tunnel flipping through WG.
Maybe it's a classic case of eliminating overchoice: select information clearly presented sometimes works better than a compendium of everything under the sun.
