Michael Jackson: The Remix Suite

First to recommend

Description

This one took me by surprise, why? Because the translation of the word "remix" in my mind is "avoid". So I set my expectations on "bottom" and pressed play,...

The first track didn't do much for me, but it also wasn't cluttered with a lot of ego-rapping all over it, so I went to the next track and was instantly happy with the direction that The Neptune's took with "Never Can Say Goodbye", but the throwaway talk added to the track ruined the song for me, so on to the next track, Dallas Austin's take on "I Wanna Be Where You Are", I loved it, the next track, Polow's "Dancing Machine" sold me! Polow takes one J5's signature hits and firmly shapes it with a contemporary sound (Wow speaking about contemporary remixes, Benny Blanco's remix of "Ain't No Sunshine" is so epic in it's feel that it could be expanded across a series of albums.), and then Salaam Remi's remix of ABC--yes! I began to realize that this was not just a good collection, it was crucial. For example Emile Haynie mix of "Maria" gave legs to a song that I would usually pass up in it's original version. and then I listened to the next and the next and now I'm here recommending it.

I understand this album was just the tip of the Michael Jackson Remix iceberg, I hope the other additions are as exciting as this one. Thank you Motown.

Feeling Pulled Apart by Horses/ The Hollow Earth : Thom Yorke

First to recommend

Description

My favorite on the two track offering is "FeelingPulledApartByHorses" which is written and played by Jonny and Thom, it's a rework of an old tune that had been kicking around for a while, glad that it's finally found a home.

Devil's Halo: Me'Shell Ndegéocello

First to recommend

Description

Devil's Halo shows off a wide range of styles which may have been eclipsed on other albums. A colorful collection of psychedelic R & B, soulful rock, and throbbing ballads whose melodic gravity feels both loose and captivating in each performance. Yet as much as I enjoy the upbeat songs, in my ears Ndegéocello is the queen of the make-out song and I'm ecstatic that she continues to explore the tender and smooth grooves that run deep with in Devil's Halo.

Bossa Nova Delhi: Ana Rita Simonka

Description

I love when music crosses over cultural lines. On Ana Rita Simonka's "Bossa Nova Delhi" sacred mantras from India is mingled with Brazilian Sounds. The result goes perfectly with toast.

Deseos: Mariem Hassan

First to recommend

Description

Saharaui singer Mariem Hasan has become the representative voice for her exiled people throughout the world. After a number of collaborations with musicians from Africa and Europe, Deseo presents her in a more personal forum, accompanied by her brother Boika on guitar and percussionist Leila, under the direction of arranger and guitarist Baba Salama, three great musicians coming out of the refugee camps of Tinduf. The rough, bluesy sound is not unlike Tinariwen's 'desert blues' groove, but the voice of Hassan takes it all to a new level. These raw and wonderful songs speak of despair and hope, love and beauty in the face of hardship, and the acompaniment is equal to their force.

Exposure: The Best of Gary Numan 1977-2002: Gary Numan

First to recommend

Description

Gary Numan is complex, pure, metal, magic, dark. He's got that down in the park voix, like a prayer for the unborn, like films, like cars, it's music for chameleons wearing deadliner. Gary Numan reminds us that we are so fragile, we are like glass, this exposure to a dead heaven, where we take mystery to bed, is a peak at dominion day. "listen to my voice," he sings "M.E. Me I disconnect from you, every day I die, I die you die, remember I was vapour... "
