Roots: The Saga of an American Family

First to recommend

Description

I don't know a single black family that didn't have a copy of Roots in their house. This isn't the cover I remember. It had a white sleeve with big brown texts. This is recommended reading for all Americans and anyone interested in American history. Not just the history that sings of freedom but ignores its huge history of chattle slavery. An economic practice that has far reaching psychological and economical effects. This is about American history, not just Black history. (via Amazon)

The Holy Bible King James Version

First to recommend

Description

Pre and Post Apocalyptic tool number 1:
Now, in case of the apocalypse, you'll need to grab your holy scripture of choice. Whatever it is, make sure you have it on you at all times. Because even if your other survivor friends make fun of you or you may not experience a divine miracle I guarantee that at some point the book itself will either take a bullet that was aimed for your heart OR break what could have been a deadly fall. Trust me, I've watched a lot of apocalyptic movies. God works in mysterious ways.
(Atheists, you may want to bring something by Nietzsche. Just make sure it measures in weight and dimensions the same as the Bible. (via Amazon)

US Army Survival Manual

First to recommend

Description

I remember browsing through this book a few years ago at Barnes & Nobles and having a hard time putting it down. It tells you how to make a shelter, find food, kill animals and most importantly how to psychologically assess the individuals in a group of survivors. This way you can see who most likely won't make it. Or who will be the most problematic. (You know, the consistent whiner or crier or overly agitated and aggressive) What if you were to say obsessively eat pine cones and rub straw in your hair, like I would probably do. (via Amazon)

The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook

4 people recommended this item

Description

From the website: "This handy and informative how-to is based on consultations with experts in a variety of fields such as stunt-car driving, alligator wrestling, and medicine. It tells you how to survive, escape from, or otherwise deal with extreme, unforeseen situations that are often life-threatening--such as how to fend off a shark attack or what to do when your parachute fails to open. Some are more likely to occur, such as how to deal with a downed power line or how to deliver a baby in a taxicab. Highly entertaining and practical."

JOSE SARAMAGO Blindness

First to recommend

Description

I'm a bit dissapointed that the film adaptation of this disturbing book changed the lead character from a man to a woman. Which makes me imagine that the changed a lot of other things as well. If your interested in the story, I highly recommend you read the book first. Its the story of a man who has retained his sight in a world paralyzed by blindness. This doesn't necessarily turn out to his advantage as he's the only one witnessing the mad, desperate horror of the depths humanity will plunge in a time of crisis. (via Amazon)
