Love Those Derby Dames - a list by hanahula

About this list:

I adore hats. Yet, like many modern women, I rarely wear the ones I own except in the winter or to the beach. Today (May 3, 2008) is a glorious day for hats in America. But where? The Kentucky Derby, no less. A great horse race, to be sure. But an equally great fashion show as well. Perhaps we should take a cue from those Southern ladies and get a little more festive with our millinery. (In memoriam: Eight Belles)

Qualifications:

I did a little millinery research when living in Manhattan.

I wish I knew where she bought her hat, but I am afraid the reporter was more interested in the horses . . .

Anthropologie: Cabrillo Hat

Description

You need a good sense of yourself as well as at least a smidgen of self-confidence to wear something other than a baseball hat. Hats used to be all the rage, but somehow they have fallen out of favor with most modern women. So, if you dare, you may just set off a new and stylish return to the wearing of big, bold, beautiful hats by venturing out in one you greatly admire. Here is a gorgeous summer version for you to try . . .

Athleta: Cowgirl Straw Hat

Description

Take a break from wool, cowgirls ! Now that the sun is shining a little hotter, give yourself some room to breath in a straw hat you can mold to your liking. As great for beach as it is for the trail . . .

Anthropologie: Lombardy Cap

First to recommend

Description

This hat reminds me of "The Great Gatsby". Although the colors and fabrics are darker than those worn by the character of Daisy, the hat has a certain jaunty attitude that is nicely balanced by its ladylike details. A quick-change artist as well, this hat will un-snap to become a full bucket hat.

Hatsinthebelfry: The Perfect Touch by Betmar

Description

This hat requires a bit more daring, adorned with a few feathers and going wider at the brim. It is, indeed, such a stunning look that you will require little in the way of additional accessories.

Squishee IV Cap by Eric Javits

First to recommend

Description

Though this sun hat has a quirky name, it is actually elegant enough to wear with a party dress. The "Squishee" refers to its ability to bounce back from being sat upon or squished into a cramped space (like your tote bag.) Shown here in natural, I love it in pink. Also available in black and camel.

Anthropologie: Monochrome Sun Hat

First to recommend

Description

This women's hat is a little easier to try, if you are having some doubts. A little less conspicuous in black and white, it won't call as much attention to you as a broader brimmed, more colorful version would. Yet, it still has loads more pizazz than your average baseball hat.

This British milliner created some of the hats for Ralph Lauren's spring collection. You may have seen some of the floral versions featured in Vogue or Bazaar. I poked around his collection a bit and found a few designs that I particularly love. Even if you have no intentions of wearing a hat this spring, this website is a joy to behold. (via Shop Vogue)

This pink hat can be dressed up with a fresh flower or ribbon trim. Left as is, it would look lovely with a simple summer sundress or your favorite pair of bermudas and a polo shirt.

A fabulous hat, not too broad but just substantial enough to not be mistaken for a sun hat. And such a lovely shade of pink !
