xkcd.com is one of the best sciency, mathy, geeky webcomics out there. If you have an un-natural fear (or wariness) of raptors and perl programming, this is the spot for you.

The "Science It Works Bitches" shirt is blunt and perfect. It's even better when you know what the COBE Mission was :) (via sciencegeek)

Why Darwin Matters: The Case Against Intelligent Design: Michael Shermer

First to recommend

Description

Michael Shermer of the Skeptic Society is one of the top science speakers today. His rational approach to science and society and his critiques on bunk, psuedoscience, junk science, and just plain bad science earns him a reputation for being a top skeptic.

This book, Why Darwin Matters, gives us the positive history of evolution and natural selection in history, in science, in society and in technology.

Shermer easily dissects Intelligent Design (ID) as a hypothesis that doesnt further knowledge and the pursuit of science, but as a "show stopper" where things become too complex, a designer must have done it.

He honestly deals with some of the perversions of natural selection as it applies to the horrible practice of social darwinism practiced by people, and aptly shows that it's not the theory of natural selection or evolution that causes these things, but the perversion of science and the ability of some people to take a theory and take it out of context.

A great book, a must read especially if you care about science or science education.

One Universe: At Home in the Cosmos: Neil de Grasse Tyson, Charles Tsun-Chu Liu, Robert Irion

First to recommend

Description

Tyson, Liu and Irion are some of the best astronomers and science communicators around today, and their book "One Universe: At Home in the Cosmos" is a brilliantly written and accessible book for anyone fascinated in what's around us, what makes things tick and the natural order of the universe.

They take complex ideas and theories and make them understandable, they reduce the immense scope of the universal physics and present it in a way that doesnt detract from the immensity of scale. A briliant book.

Charles Darwin Poster

First to recommend

Description

Charles Darwin is almost mythically important in science, it was his curiosity, his obsessive note-taking and his keen observation that led to his theory of Natural Selection as the force that drove the evolution of species.

Off of his theory, almost every scientific discipline gained a powerful tool for prediction and a way to describe natural events.

What better way to honor this forward thinking visionary than with a cool and kitschy poster!

Flock of Dodos: Behind Modern Creationism, Intelligent Design and the Easter Bunny: Barrett Brown, Jon P Alton

First to recommend

Description

A brilliant look at the controversy surrounding science and intelligent design (which is basically creationism re-branded), a flock of dodos explore not the evidence for or against the ideas, but looks at the people, the situations and the controversy.

A must read for anyone who enjoys science debate and history.

Monkey Girl: Evolution, Education, Religion, and the Battle for America's Soul: Edward Humes

First to recommend

Description

In Monkey Girl, Edward Humes explores the controversy surrounding creationism, science, evolution and intelligent design.

Taking a pro-science stance, he dissects the arguments of the intelligent design (ID) movement and shows that there are some hurdles toward good science education.

It's a brilliant book and a very poignant book about how the argument is being framed. While there's little debate about ID in science, outside the profession, the ID advocates are using legislation and litigation rather than research and debate to promote ID.
