Tinkertoy Classic Construction Set

Description

Of course they'll build guns with this set, but wouldn't you rather they use their imaginations then some out-of-the-box realistic plastic thing? These toys are so simple and sturdy but, like LEGOs, provide hours of endless possibilities.

LEGO

First to recommend

Description

The LEGO Large Brick Box is filled with over four hundred classic pieces. The possiblities are a limited as your imagination. Steer clear of the sets that "make something" and give a child this tub of basic shapes and sizes. LEGO bricks help with fine motor skills, spatial understanding, imagination, counting and creativity.

Dexton 6' Great Plains Tepee

Description

Perfect for indoor use but can be used outdoors as well. Not recommended for camping. Simple construction with wood poles and cotton canvas fabric. Consider reading "My Indian Boyhood" by Luther Standing Bear (ages 8 and up) by flashlight in this very fun, realistic tipi. Highly recommend buying a battery operated lantern to hang inside!

Melissa & Doug 100-pc. Wood Block Set

First to recommend

Description

Building with blocks seems simple however, unlike LEGOs these wooden blocks don't lock in place. Therefore, more complicated building requires gentle balance which serves to enhance fine motor skills. They are fun for young and old, little ones love to build simple towers to knock down while older children re-create more complicated structures.

Description

Okay, this is the only toy on my list that requires batteries. This flashlight has a built-in "siren" (really a whistle) and button for flashing Morse Code (chart included).
