Blade Runner : The Final Cut

Description

I've been waiting for this for too long. Unfortunately I'd seen the original theatrical release so many times that when I finally got a chance to see the far superior "Director's Cut" I still had the crappy Deckard's voiceover narration running in my head--nightmare! This time I'm ready, many years have past since the "Director's Cut" I can now enjoy the new "Final Cut" without total recall of Deckard narrating each shot

Hot Buttered Soul ~ Isaac Hayes

Description

a legendary masterpiece--I've only recently discovered--not that I haven't heard the gravitational sounds from this pivotal Isaac Hayes album or radio before. Now I feel it's important to get the word out, the Isaac Hayes version of Burt Bacharach's "Walk On By" and Jimmy Webb's "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," are slow burn love songs lasting 12 and 18.5 minutes apiece. The 10-minute "Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic," caught me off guard, but now I'm hooked.

Divine Horsemen: The Living Gods of Haiti ~ Maya Deren

First to recommend

Description

Maya Deren takes us on a journey into the fascinating world of the Voudoun religion, whose devotees commune with the cosmic powers through invocation, offerings, song and dance. The Voudoun pantheon of deities, or loa, is witnessed as being living gods and goddesses, actually taking possession of their devotees. The soundtrack conveys the incantatory power of the ritual drumming and singing. (via Peregrine)

Cambodian Rocks Volume 1

First to recommend

Description

Before the genocide in Cambodia in 1975, Cambodians traveled in and out of France and became very influenced by the western music. Can you imagine music echoed from the Beatles, Bee Gees, Monkees, Santana, Van Morrison, Scott McKenzie, Carpenters, and much more in Cambodian versions and lyrics?! These two collections prove it all with many more to be heard in the future compilation. These late-60's/early 70's era songs have a sound that's completely inexplicable despite the use of standard rock instrumentation and song structures. The blossoming night club scene in the urban areas and loads of bar bands during the '70s brought true music groups together, combining a fascinating and primal version of rock n roll, surf, r 'n' b - sometimes all in one song.

Brigitte Bardot - Divine - DVD

First to recommend

Description

I live for unexpected fun, I got that and so much more when a good friend played a rare VHS version of Brigitte Bardot's 1968 New Year's Special for me. At first I was dumfounded that I didn't know about this cool TV special from 1960's France, and then shocked to discover that Serge Gainsbourg (Charlotte Gainsbourg's father) composed and appeared in three music video performances featured in the show, "Harley Davidson", "Bonnie and Clyde" and "Bubble Gum". Next I was mesmerized by the amazing late 60's fashion, styling and photo direction that makes this time capsule great. By the end I wanted to get a copy of this hidden gem for all my friends, but at that time there were only hard to find bootleg copies on VHS. But now I've discovered that the official Brigitte Bardot special has been released on DVD, YES!!! (via Sean McCabe)
