The Walkmen - You & Me

First to recommend

Description

this is a pretty great album. no raging anthems like "little house of savages"--more like "the new year." a bit more like...epic depression, i think. i'll have to listen to it more. and you should too.

Calexico - Carried to Dust

Description

i hadn't really heard much of this band before the ep they did with iron and wine, but they're pretty great. folky tunes with some mexican horns, perfect for the end of summer.

Girl Talk - Feed the Animals

4 people recommended this item

Description

The newest album from Girl Talk, the moniker of Gregg Gillis pulls an "In Rainbows" and allows listeners to pay whatever they want for the album. I guess it's only fitting. You know, because he blatantly "samples" everybody's music, without paying loyalties. Regardless of your thoughts on his process, this is one of the most fun albums I've heard all year. The highlight comes at the end of track six when he mixes Yael Naim's "New Soul" (the song from the Apple commercial) with some Eminem song telling you to "get buzz, get drunk, get crunk..."

It's a fusion of all genres of music, creating some weird, pseudo club music that nearly anyone can enjoy.

Lil' Wayne - Tha Carter III

Description

lil' wayne is, in fact, the best rapper alive--hell, he's probably top-5 all-time. lead single 'lollipop' is one of the more mainstream tracks on this sixteen-track opus, which takes plenty of lyrical and sonic left turns.

The Hold Steady - Stay Positive

Description

true, this album doesn't actually come out for a month, but most of the tracks have leaked/been played live already (edit: slash i got my dirty paws on a mastered leak). and they are outstanding. craig finn and co. keep wearing the neo-springsteen tag proudly, adding to their already-impressive catalog with tracks like "constructive summer", "lord, i'm discouraged", "stay positive" and "ask her for some adderall" (reportedly slated to become a vinyl b-side).

from the press release, written by finn: "A great American philosopher named D. Boon once said 'our band could be your life.' I think that is true. But 'your life could be our band' is also a true statement. I know this because we have lived it. These are our lives. These are your lives. This is our fourth record. Stay Positive."

ATTIGO Touchscreen Turntable

First to recommend

Description

this is a really intriguing approach to djing--a touchscreen turntable. it uses a touch-sensitive screen with an interface similar to serato. while it's just a one-off prototype (for now) and the jury's out on its performance, usability and durability, it'll definitely find its way into the homes of design-obsessed bedroom djs.

from the video, it looks like it runs tiger, which also opens up a lot of possibilities. check the via link for video. (via gizmodo)

LO-FI-FNK - Boylife

First to recommend

Description

kind of a streamlined hot chip, with that scandanavian electro-pop sensibility thrown in. fun, dancy and happy-sounding without being too saccharine. gets a little repetitive, though. still good, though.
