Motorcycling - a list by spench

About this list:

I have this desire to put a list together. A list of everything I could ever want on a motorcycle. Sure, it might end up too heavy to pick up if I ever dropped it. And yeah, probably couldn't afford this un-liftable beastie to begin with. But I can dream!

Qualifications:

Have travelled far on 2 wheels.

Therm-a-Rest Compressible Pillow - Medium

First to recommend

Description

I admit it, I bought one of these for my big motorcycle trip. I keep talking about how essential it is to carry little weight backpacking and that there is hardly any room for anything in motorcycle baggage, but if you can't sleep well, screw it. Piles of dirty laundry are no substitute for a pillow.

Eureka Spitfire One Person Tent

First to recommend

Description

This tent packs down to nothing, and doesn't way much more. It's not roomy inside, but this is basic shelter, and I'm 6'2" and I can at least sit up inside enough to get dressed. Perfect for ultra lightweight backpacking and motorcycle touring. Cheap too!!!

Sonic Impact IF1 Speaker System

First to recommend

Description

I brought one of these on my motorcycle trip to South America. It was probably the largest, heaviest "non-essential" item on the trip. It has a built in rechargeable battery so it's perfect for camping, or those spots where the electricity goes off at night. It also charges the iPod when the unit is plugged in, so you don't need to carry a separate iPod charger. The sound is really surprisingly good for such a small sound system.

Sonic Impact Portable iPod Speaker System

First to recommend

Description

I have the speaker system for iPod that Sonic Impact first put out a couple years ago. It has great sound and was a joy to travel with. This system steps up to the new iPods with drives large enough to hold movies, but displays that seem too small to comfortably watch them.

Arc'Teryx Sigma AR Jacket

First to recommend

Description

Arc'Teryx jackets are almost ridiculously expensive, but then you try one on and realize they are somehow worth it. No technical detail is ignored, and no expense avoided to bring us the best technical outwear on the market.

Petzl Zipka Plus LED Headlamp

First to recommend

Description

This might be the most important item to bring to Burning Man after a tent and lots of water. It might even be more important than your tent as it allows you to set up your tent in the dark if you get there in the middle of the night,. Being able to perform tasks without using one of your two hands to hold a flashlight is a jo. This particular light has a thin zip line instead of a strap to hold it on your head, so it takes up so little room you can keep it in your pocket when you're not using it. One caveat, it you have long hair the zip line might snag it.

BMW Hyper-Lite Kits

First to recommend

Description

Motorcycles are never seen by motorists. Never. Even a bike that is not small like the R1200GS still seems invisible to all the drivers on the road. Yes, all of them. Anything you can do to increase your visibility gives you a better chance of surviving this rather dangerous hobby. Flashing tail lights help.

Firstgear Kilimanjaro 4.0 Motorcycle Jacket

First to recommend

Description

Here;s a solid jacket for motorcycling. I have an older version of this I bought used that is holding up well. For warmer weather the Kilimanjaro Air is a fine choice. I bought one of those new and then stupidly left it at an oil change place in Cusco, when I came back for it it was gone. I'm personally not into the black and yellow color scheme, but I chose this one because it is the most visible. You can get an all black one too, that's what I have, it makes me more stealth (and invisible to all other motorists).

Firstgear Ht Air Overpant

First to recommend

Description

Having the proper gear is an essential part of motorcycle touring. First Gear makes economical apparel that will protect you in the event of an accident. My advice, don't fall to being with. Sometimes it just happens.
