Cover Tunes - a list by alesia121

About this list:

I love it when someone takes a familiar song and adds their own twist to create a cover version that stands alone. Often there will be only one cover track thrown into the mix with original music. Give it a listen!

Qualifications:

tunes by someone other than the original artist

Losing My Religion: Jacqui Naylor

First to recommend

Description

Jacqui Naylor has a smokey jazz voice that you'll either love or hate - what she does with songs is also something you'll either love or hate. Her rendition of REM's "Losing My Religion" is one I love. There are several on her "You don't know Jacq" disc - Summertime, My Funny Valentine, and How Deep is your Love, for instance.

American IV: The Man Comes Around: Johnny Cash: Music

First to recommend

Description

Johnny Cash makes Nine Inch Nails "Hurt" sound like it was written just for him.

This is a cover album and it ranges from Nine Inch Nails to Depeche Mode to Simon and Garfunkle and a lot in between.

I think it's a classic all by itself.

1200 Curfews: Indigo Girls: Music

First to recommend

Description

A fantastic album in its own right, and one of my all-time favorites. It also has three wonderful cover tunes in the mix : Joni Mitchell's "River", Bob Dylan's "Tangled up in Blue" and Gladys Night's "Midnight Train to Georgia".

Flawless.

Philadelphia: Original Soundtrack: Music

Description

Several covers on this one, but the Indigo Girls version of "I don't want to talk about it" stands out (originally by Crazy Horse, but most folks know the Rod Stewart version).

Across the Borderline: Willie Nelson

First to recommend

Description

If you are a Paul Simon fan, you might be skeptical of Willie Nelson covering Graceland. Don't be. I think it is one of the most perfect combinations out there. The rest of the album is fantastic as well, but it's the cover of Graceland that moved me.

Mountain Love: Hayseed Dixie

Description

I'm fascinated with bluegrass covers of old pop tunes... it's true.

"My Best Friend's Girl" is the standout on this compilation.

Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch...: Texas Lightning

First to recommend

Description

The German entry into the 2006 Eurovision contest Texas Lightning is a German band who performs country and western covers of pop songs. In English. Really. You can't make this stuff up!!!! They did not win the Eurovision contest, but they definitely turned heads.

My personal favorite on the cd is their cover version of Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror", but ABBA's "Dancing Queen" is a close second.
