Reclaimed Lumber Benches

First to recommend

Description

I've been wanting a bench like this for as long as I can remember. I've always loved this style, but I've never had a place big enough. Funny how it turns out they're the perfect design style for creating sustainable furniture.

In order to achieve the best sustainable outcome for these gorgeous benches, BWC created each bench 20ft in length, keeping the material mostly in its found state (long huge planks of reclaimed wood).

I always feel inspired when I witness a natural cycle of 'need' becoming 'desire.'

Interactive LED Coffee Table - The Ripple

Description

This interactive table has LED twinkling stars that are constant, but it can sensor motion that is above it and responds by changing to constant ambient light. Movement will cause a rippling light effect from the 480 super-bright white LEDs below the surface. Really cool concept made into a real product.

In addition, it is constructed of 100% sustainable material and water-based finish. In full active mode, it uses only 30 watts of power.

Mold & Germ Destroying Air Purifier

First to recommend

Description

Works up to 550 sq. ft. and the best looking one I've seen in the market to date. I don't know why, but air purifiers and dehumidifiers are so uuurgly! I crinched each time I had to buy one.

This unit is not just nice looking, but its list of "why buy me" qualities is quite impressive . It uses heat to kill airborne mold, bacteria, viruses, dust mites, and pollens. The surprising part is the heating does not heat the environment (interesting how they do that) AND it uses less energy than a 60 watt light bulb. That's REALLY impressive.

Of course I'm getting one. I never knew how useful air filters can be, until I got one. Now I have four and ready for more!

large market bag brown

First to recommend

Description

Brilliant use of Tyvek (the material they use for those US Postal envelopes). It's light like paper but strong like plastic. Because... it is basically plastic. IT's made of high-density polyethelene. Great as a reusable bag because it can fold small and store easily.

RECYCLED SAIL TOTES

First to recommend

Description

I've always loved these recycled sail tote bags. I'm glad to see them offering more styles. These totes are better than some I've seen because the lines are better. The shape is that of a french market basket, which is totally cute.

Description

Great application using recycled newspaper. I'm not sure the strength of the handles though... Probably more for lightweight shopping. No canned foods probably.

Description

I've owned the messenger bag for a few years now, and I love it still. I'm glad to see the manufacturer branched out to additional styles. I love these little cosmetic bags. The fact that they're recycled Vietnamese rice bags make it even more special for me personally.

the Nomad yurt by ECOSHACK

6 people recommended this item

Description

Where have I been? This was recommended in July and I totally missed it? Wow, this ecoshack is one of the coolest things ever.

Called The Nomad, it is a reinvention of the real Yurt - “THE EARLIEST YURT, the 'ger' (rhymes with air), was an ancient indigenous structure used by nomadic herders on the steppes of Central Asia. A transportable dwelling that is easily dismantled, carried on pack animals and set up again, yurts are ideally suited to the main principle of a nomad's life: 'I carry all my things with me.'

Other than how to cover the air hole at the top... I think this is a great Burning Man tent. If the Mongolians were able to exist with this, I would think for a week, Burners would be able to as well.

Sustainable Dog Dens

First to recommend

Description

My friend Aaron was over the other night and kept bugging me about "Hey, you have to look at my friend Stephanie's site. She makes great sustainable dog houses." Being a product person, I get this a lot. So I was invisibly rolling my eyes.

Then I went to check it out.

Awesome stuff. I love the hard architectural elements of the structures integrated with the soft beauty of the plants. Not just a pretty doggie digg, Oakland designer Stephanie Rubin thought this out quite well. She designed the units smell good, grow plants, attract butterflies, filter water, insulate, and repel fleas. All naturally. Bravo.

However, at $6,000 (that's for the extra large, and I have two so make that $12,000), I'm not sure I would let my dogs near one.
