Gnomes 30th Anniversary Edition
First to recommend
Description
Another find at "Toad Hall," this book was so fascinating to me as a child! It is a beautifully illustrated, and perfectly scientific book describing every aspect of Gnome life. It sounds really far fetched, but it made me believe in them as a kid! It goes into everything about gnomes - their anatomy, their homes, their diet, their tools, their skills, their enemies, their habitat... This is a real conversation starter and makes a great coffee table book!

The Awakening and Other Stories : Kate Chopin
First to recommend
Description
Another relatively unknown author, Kate Chopin was a pinnacle of the local color movement. The Awakening takes place in Victorian New Orleans among the Creole culture. It's a great story of a woman who does not embrace her role as wife, mother, or her place in society, and wishes to be free. This novel was not received well and even banned when it was written because women were not allowed to think or behave freely, and it was seen as distasteful. It's a great book!

Guy de Maupassant is an amazing 19th-century author from France that many people don't know about. His stories address aspects of human personality and relationships and society, and were way ahead of their time. If you haven't read him yet, try this book out!

Hemingway on Fishing
First to recommend
Description
Fishing was Ernest Hemingway's favorite thing to do, and also one of mine! This includes selected chapters from his books, along with short stories - all based around or including fishing. Many of the stories also take place in Michigan, where he spent a lot of time, and I'm all about my home state!

Another childhood favorite - I discovered this book while staying at a cottage appropriately named Toad Hall, and next door to Mole's End. Children's novels from this time period really intrigue me for some reason.

Daughter of Fortune: Isabel Allende
First to recommend
Description
This is a great book about an orphaned girl in Chile growing up with a Victorian spinster and her two brothers. When she meets her first love, she eventually follows him to California during the Gold Rush.
The story is VERY vivid in detail - getting into the culture of China, Chile, Mexico, California, England... I love the references to the rituals and medical practices of the time. Those little details are often overlooked in historical fiction, but Isabel Allende hit a homer with this one! Love it!
