About this list:

It's easy to stress about all the stuff you'll need for a newborn. I "just" had my second (she's 8 months eek) and have been pulling together recs for my girlfriends who are having their first. Here are some of my tried-and-true essentials for baby and mom.

Slingling baby sling

First to recommend

Description

First, I LOVE baby slings. Ask my husband and he will roll his eyes and tell you that I'm an expert because I spiraled out of control shopping for slings on mat leave. I had a new native, but wanted a new one. Bought a hotsling, then returned it (too bulky). Girlfriend had a slingling, so checked it out. You can only buy these online and many of the designs are well, not the hippest, but they are well made and you'll save a few bucks from the other designer slings. They run on the large size so you may want to order up (or you can put them in the dryer and they will shrink a bit).

Bebe au Lait & Hooter Hiders - Award-Winning Nursing Covers for Chic Mothers

3 people recommended this item

Description

Even with 2 kids, I never quite got the hang of nursing in public. Got this for my second and it was awesome (until daughter decided she didn't want to be covered anymore). You just put it over your head and drape over baby. You can see what you're doing, but you and baby stay covered so you don't have to think about being discreet.

My Brest Friend Nursing Pillow

First to recommend

Description

This is a great nursing pillow. It's flat so it's easy to position the baby. It also wraps around and snaps in to provide back support (you can even walk around with baby feeding - be careful though). The cover is machine washable and easy to put on and off.

diapees & wipees | unique bag designed for fashionable Moms

3 people recommended this item

Description

Wish I had this with my first kid. I've ditched the diaper bag altogether with my second. Just toss this in your purse or in your car and you're good to go. Very cute, very compact. I did pink disco dots.

Lansinoh Disposable Nursing Pads, 60-Count

Description

These are the bets disposable nursing pads (trust me after two kids!). I tried other brands and washables, but they were SO bulky there was no way I'd ever venture out in public.

Ocean Wonders Aquarium Bouncer

Description

I agree with debegray. If you buy any baby gear for your kid, buy a bouncy. It gives you some much-needed hands-free time until the kid is trying to flip out and crawl. I had this one for my son and got a pink flower one for my daughter.

Summers Lab Triple Paste Medicated ointment for diaper rash 2 oz.

3 people recommended this item

Description

This is the best diaper cream out there. Never needed cream with my son, but every day for my baby girl. I've tried all the others and none work like this one.

Glamourmom Nursing Bra Tank

2 people recommended this item

Description

A couple of these in different colors will help you feel more normal, than not (even though the tank does have easy access for breastfeeding). They're great because they offer so much coverage while you breastfeed.

Target Gilligan & O'Malley Nursing Tank

First to recommend

Description

If you're nursing, you need a good nursing tank. Keeps your tummy covered and still gives you easy access. They are also GREAT for warm weather. I've tried a bunch and think that these are the best out there (they also happen to be the cheapest... a plus, right?). These are soft and very comfy. The clips are the easiest for on and off of all that I've tried. They don't hold up as well as the more expensive ones, so stock up (order online as in-store they are always sold out).
