Time Machines - a list by dwilliams

About this list:

Time is an artificial construct, a sort of consensual hallucination. I think that might be the basic reason we can be so obsessed with it. It's not real and yet we believe that it is and we allow it to govern, even control our lives. Our fascination with time takes shape in the myriad of time keeping devices available. This list contains timekeeping devices I would like to own or think are just pretty darn neat.

Time Cube Clock

Description

It is a good day whenever I find a new source for new clocks. This looks like something one of the cenobites from the Hellraiser movies might have sitting on their bedside table.

RetroOnline: Atomic clock modern design wall clock 16

Description

Besides Steampunk, I am also a big fan of retrofuture products. What that means to me are those products, designed in the past (usually around the 50s) that believed they were providing a view of what the future would look like. Or those products (like this one I believe) that look like they were designed in the 50s by someone trying to figure out what wall clocks would look like in the future. The result is this.

Oregon Scientific Laser Engraved Forecaster

The acrylic block displays three 3D icons — laser-engraved in crystal — that light up in color to represent sunny, rainy or cloudy skies. The radio-controlled U.S. Atomic clock in the base switches to a temperature readout with a wave of your hand.

Wave Tidal Clock

Description

At first I thought this was some odd mashup between a mantle clock and one of those hypno wheels. Upon closer examination it is a wave tidal clock. Not as good but close enough.

Jonas Damon Open Edition LED Clock

14 people recommended this item

Description

The clock is a series of cubes, each displaying one glowing number and when placed in the correct order, it displays the current time. We liked the idea of abstracting time and breaking it up into a set of constantly changing numbers.

Gucci The G Chrono with Diamonds

Description

Okay, so what makes this watch worth over 4 thousand dollars? Well it might be the 54 diamonds; 0.78 total carat weight, or the Sapphire crystal...but its also because its got the word "Gucci" on it. For those of you impressed by such, here's a watch.
