The Velvet Underground - Gold

First to recommend

Description

I'm Waiting For The Man is one of the best songs EVER! It's raw and edgy and dangerous. The Velvets were way ahead of their time. Get this CD to see why (in case you have been living on another planet for the past 35 years) and remember.

How I love this CD by an original maven, Patti Smith. The opening lines to Gloria (those who know the song, know what I mean, I won't post them here as I'm reviewing great music, not trying to start controversy) will just blow you away and she does not let up through the entire CD! Let's not forget another one of my heroes Lenny Kaye plays on this CD too (not only is he a great musician, but he has done a ton along with Little Steven for garage rock)!

Young Loud and Snotty - The Dead Boys

First to recommend

Description

While these guys were originally from Cleveland, NYC adopted them and I really associate them with NYC and the whole CBGB's sound! To me this is a seminal album that everyone needs to own. I also adore Stiv Bators and was lucky enough to see him live with the Lords of the New Church (one of my fav. all time bands). This CD was also produced by music maven extrodinare Genya Ravan!

Greatest Hits - Dion

First to recommend

Description

I have Handsome Dick Manitoba to thank for my appreciation of Dion. On his show on the Underground Garage on Sirius Satellite radio he frequently plays Dion and also has said that if you play any Dion song on a jukebox it makes people happy and energizes them. I have become a Dion believer. When he first came out he was way before my time. I mainly associated him with Runaround Sue (still not my favorite Dion song). However then I heard the Wanderer, Ruby Baby and my absolute favorite Dion song, King of the New York Streets (it is not what you think if you only know 50's Dion....its dirty and gritty....so cool). Check out this CD which is a great overview of his music and you can thank Handsome Dick Manitoba!

Music by Mavens

Updated May 14, 2008

Music by women who are true Mavens (and a few who are new on the scene and appear to be up and coming Mavens, IMO).
