Where the Wild Things Are - Film Release

First to recommend

Description

This movie has been in production since 2004! Its directed by Spike Jonze and co written by Dave Eggars. The icing on the cake is the costumes and creature effects have been done by the Jim Henson Creature shop, which means minimal CGI and actual costumes. Yay! If all goes well, which it seems like it hasn't, this movie should hit theaters in October of 2009. (via FIlm Releases)

Another high five to Canada for their kids programs. This show was really good. It reminds me of the Outer Limits but with kids. (via Amazon)

Dreamchild

Description

I loved this version. It begins with an elderly Alice (who the story was based on) on her way to the U.S. to participate in a celebration of Lewis Carol and his books. The movie then segues into flashbacks of her childhood and the fantasy world. This version was a bit darker. The puppets (made by Jim Henson's Workshop) were kind of scary and nightmarish. This was an amazing TV series from one of my favorite innovators and cultural icons. These fantasy tales showcased Henson's darker side.

Dragonslayer

Description

Awesome, awesome, awesome fantasy film from the 80's! It's about...well. dragons and a young dragon slayer. But it's not as fluffy and snow white as you might think. These dragons are scary and devour sacrificial virgins. And the special effects still hold up today. (via Amazon)

Little House on the Prairie: The Complete Television Series

You know, $200 is not a bad price for a box set of the entire series. Especially since it was on for a million years. However, in this recession, I'll have to hold off for now. Great show for the entire family that covered complex themes. (via Amazon)
