About this list:

Here I present to you, in no particular order or ranking, a list of songs and/or albums that I love. I have no real genre preference, although you may notice that there is more of one particular type of music represented here than another. That's purely accidental. I love music that moves me: that makes me laugh, sing, cry, dance, reminisce, dream or think. And I'm always in search of more music to accompany on this wild and crazy ride we call life . . .

iTunes Store: Sophie B. Hawkins - Tongues and Tails

First to recommend

Description

I got hooked on Sophie B. when I first heard "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover". It was so gritty and honest. But then I listened to the rest of the album and realized that she IS gritty and honest . . . all of her songs get their hooks in you eventually and you find yourself grooving right along with her. Well, at least, I did. And do.

iTunes Store - Original Broadway Cast "Rent" - Rent (1996 Original Broadway Cast) [Cast Recording]

First to recommend

Description

I have been fortunate enough to see both the Broadway play and the movie, so I am a bit torn as to which soundtrack to recommend. Both are available on iTunes, so I leave the choice up to you. But, no matter how bad you think your voice is, you will not be able to keep yourself from singing out loud to "Seasons of Love" . . .

Sarah McLachlan - Mirrorball

First to recommend

Description

Ever since I first heard her sing "I Will Remember You" during the movie, "The Brothers McMullen", I have loved Sarah's powerfully beautiful voice. Interesting that the movie and soundtrack of "The Brothers McMullen" were the launching pad for both her career and that of Edward Burns. So much raw talent together in one place must have been an quite the artistic crucible. Three years later, Sarah launched her "Mirrorball" tour . . . and this album encompasses that first song as well as so many others I love, including "Angel" and "Possesion". Many treasures await you within this compilation.

Enya - Shepherd Moons

Description

I have yet to here an Enya melody that I didn't enjoy, but "Shepherd Moons" is my favorite of all the collections she has released to date. Her soothing voice and magical music is in a class all its own, neither strictly Celtic nor New Age nor classical. And she herself is a bit of a recluse, as if she were a voice from beyond the seas.

Various Artists - Surf's Up (Music from the Motion Picture)

First to recommend

Description

I saw this movie with my son the day it was released last June. We both laughed until we cried at the antics of Chicken Joe and the sight of surfing penguins, tattoos and all. My son worshiped the character of Codey, but I fell in love with the soundtrack. And, luckily, it's something we both enjoy listening to on our many road trips together. It's got reggae, a bit of Hawaiian music and some Pearl Jam. Great choice of music for a backyard barbecue.

The Naked Brothers Band - I Don't Want to Go to School (Deluxe Version)

First to recommend

Description

Every Saturday night my son and I watch "The Naked Brothers Band." At first, I was skeptical about the quality of both the show and the music. But the show turns out to be a great depiction of two brothers, struggling to discover who they are and to make a little music along the way. And the music is good ! It's lyrics are clearly aimed at a young crowd, but these kids really do rock . . . and I am perfectly happy to listen to this album and sing the lyrics right along with my son.

The Go-Go's - Vacation

First to recommend

Description

When the Go-Go's first released this album, it was like a dream come true. My sister and I had always harbored the desire to become one of the "Pussycats" in "Josie and the Pussycats" and performed numerous choreographed concerts for our parents. But there really were no real girl bands when I was little. "Josie and the Pussycats" was a cartoon. The Go-Go's were proof positive that girls could rock . . . all on their own. And I still harbor hopes of becoming a drummer one day.

iTunes Store: INXS - The Best of INXS

First to recommend

Description

The music of INXS followed me from high school to college and beyond. I loved (and own) every album. So, my heart broke when the lead singer, Michael Hutchence, tragically passed away in 1996. The band has continued on, but I will always prefer the Hutchence-era work of INXS.

Sara Bareilles - Little Voice

5 people recommended this item

Description

This no-so-little-voice belts out some pretty amazing ballads. The album is headlined by "Love Song" but I enjoy every single tune on it. Although she is classified as a pop artist, her music has an R&B quality to both its lyrics and her vocal interpretation of them. Great listening, in any category !

Marlo Thomas & Friends - Free to Be... You and Me

First to recommend

Description

Learning how to be comfortable in your own skin is the basic premise of this album, but it is done in such a fun, light-hearted and musically entertaining way that your children won't feel as if they are being preached at. Nor will you, for that matter. It's a wonderful album . . . and I highly recommend it for parents of pre- and elementary schoolers.
