About this list:

The film industry is pretty much done patting itself on the back and handing out awards to each other, so time to usher in the latest batch of docudramaindiethrillactionadventureanimhorromedies of 2009. Here's a list of movies I'm either really excited about seeing or vaguely interested in (meaning I'll wait for it on DVD).

Goodbye Solo

Description

This drama by filmmaker Ramin Bahrani looks like its going to pull on the ol' heart strings. Set in North Carolina its the story of an unlikely friendship between two strangers- a Senegalese cab driver struggling to provide for his family and an older, troubled, Southern American white man with a troubled past. Good grief, will this movie come out already?! I read the graphic novel and wasn't that impressed. It was good, but not as good as I thought it would be. Oh well, I'm more excited about the film which I'll probably go see opening night. (via Watchmen)

Gigantic

Description

I just heard about this movie and after having watched the trailer, I'll probably go see this in the theater minus the bf. Its quirky, its sweet and if it's half as funny as the trailer than it's gold. John Goodman and Ed Asner seem to steal the show here.
In brief, its a romantic comedy about a salesman (Paul Dano) looking to fulfill his dream of adopting a child from China (yes, really). Well along the way he falls in love with a misguided young woman (Zooey Daschanel). (via Gigantic the Movie)

This is at the top of my list of movies to see this year. Talk about an interesting cast worth watching. It stars Black Thought from the Roots, Naomie Harris, Rosario Dawson and Paul Dano as residents of a poverty stricken neighborhood in North Philladelphia (Philly! Woot!). The movie follows interconnected stories of love, relationships and poverty in this slice of life American tale. Looks powerful!
In theaters March 6th 2009. (via Apple)

Inglourious Basterds

Description

We're gonna have to wait until August to see the next Tarantino film Inglorious Basterds. Its about a renegade, ragtag group of soldiers during WWII who turn the tables on the Nazi regime. The group, lead by Brad Pitt utilize the Nazi's own strategy of barbarous terror (times ten!) to instill fear into the heart of the fascist party. I'm sure this will be a blood bath that's not for the faint of heart. (via Apple)

Sigh. I'm a sci fi head and I grew up on the classic Star Trek and TNG. So, as much as I don't want to see the new Star Trek movie, I will. I can make a list of over a dozen things wrong with this movie starting with the countless cliches evident in the trailer. At least the special effects should pay off but don't expect much more. This movie will get my money and I will kick myself for spending the 12 bucks. (via Apple)

TOKYO!

Description

Three films in one, directed by three directors about one city. Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Leos Carax (Pola X) and Joon-ho Bong (The Host) wrote and directed the films. It looks highly surreal and I will double down that it will give me nightmares. I'm not going to anticipate a cohesive story line, but it should be a fascinating and visually stunning ride. Mutant Chronicles

Description

Now this is my kind of movie! A campy, raucous, sci fi action, adventure romp set in a bleak apocalyptic future! Awesooooome. And it gets better, there's a rag tag team of highly trained and committed soldiers that have banned together to save humanity by going head to head with....MUTANTS! And, it gets better, it stars Thomas Jane (The Mist, The Punisher), John Malkovich (The Killing Fields), Devon Aoki (of....the catwalk) and Ron Perlman (Hellboy)! Oh yes, I will be there. Watch the trailer.
Hits theaters April 2009. (via Mutant Chronicles)

Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna reunited on one screen? Yes please! This comedy is about two less than bright soccer playing friends recruited for two different teams. Sony has high hopes because it bought the film before it was even screened at Sundance. Can't wait! (via Rudo Y Cursi)
